allowing only certain internet sites

Postby Donal » Feb 07 04 4:53 am

Hello,
We have just downloaded wingate v5.22 to enable blocking of certain web sites and allowing others to be accessed. At the moment we will not be using it for any other purpose apart from logging what sites are accessed. We have installed it on one of our w2k domain controllers. How exactly to we configure our wingate server to allow a list of certain web sites to be accessed and how do we configure our clients via Internet Explorer to use this proxy server. Thank you.

WinGate to allow only certain sites:
1. Open the WWW Proxy on the Services Tab in GateKeeper
2. Switch to the "Policies" tab.
3. Add the recipient "Everyone"
4. Switch to the "Ban List" tab and add every URL you want to block (Check help for more info on this)
5. Click OK out of there and set the System Policies to be "Ignored".

That should enforce the ban list for you. (Alternatively you could use PureSight, which also has a content recognition engine for Adult / Gambling sites as well as an explicit white list)

Configuring the client machines:
1. Open Internet Options from the control panel.
2. Switch to Connections
3. Open LAN Settings
4. Make sure the two "Automatic" check boxes are unchecked
5. Check "Use a proxy server"
6. Enter the address of your WinGate server and port 80.

That is one way. Another way is to set the default gateway and DNS server of each client machine (Via TCP/IP properties) to the WinGate server and to use "Transparent Redirection" (Proxy -> Sessions / Redirect Sessions) option to pass all traffic through the appropriate proxies.

OR you could use the WinGate Internet Client, which hooks all client network traffic and sends it through the WinGate Server. The advantages and disadvantages of each method is discussed in the help file.
