Can't connet to Yahoo Mail, Hotmail...etc

Postby Ropey » Nov 13 04 8:15 pm

I have a networking problem where im trying to share an ADSL connection through a Host PC running on XP.. the way i got it to work is the host PC receives the DSL connection and uses wingate lite to share the internet.

Anyway, the internet sharing is ok.. all the PCs can connect to the HOST and to the internet..... however, the weird problem is, the client PCs can not seem to open yahoo mail.. everything else works except for that.. they can do everything in yahoo except the yahoo mail! the host PC has NO PROBLEM checking yahoo email..but the rest connected to it can't.

when you click on the check mail link, or yahoo mail, the status bar shows:

1) resolving ..
2) website found..
3) waiting...

and it gets stuck there..

i tried to type mail.yahoo.com directly, and same problem.. it just seems to keep loading foverver untill it times out.... :(

Then while i was surfing using the client PCs, i noticed that it's not only yahoo mail.. hotmail seems to get stuck in loading mode too.

I dont have firewall on the Host PC.. and i dont have firewall on the client PCs i used. and yes i disabled all possible winxp firewall settings..

Here's my route print:

First question would be: Which version of WinGate are you using?

Second, have you enabled debug logging for the WWW Proxy Service you should be able to see (at least) the socket error code returned. That might help us look in the right direction for you.

Yahoo fixed, not hotmail :(

Postby Archon » Dec 15 04 6:26 pm

Wow, and Phew, sort of..... I too have been having problems connecting to various web pages, Yahoo, Hotmail, Trademe plus Outlook express no longer connects to yahoo to get my mail.

I'm trialing the latest version of Wingate and have the WGIC client installed on the client pc with IE set to use proxy. After setting port 443 in the 'secure' section of the proxy settings I was able to get to yahoo and Trademe. However Hotmail and my outlook problem is still there.

If I can iron out these problems I'll definatly be buying the software, everything else kicks MS's Proxy software, thanks :)

If you're using WGIC, why use proxy? You might find it easier to simply remove the proxy setting from IE and switch on Transparent Redirects (WinGate 5.x) or Intercepts (WinGate 6.x) on the WWW Proxy Service.

I found that if i solely used the WGIC and removed the proxy settings in IE I could no longer access sites like National bank etc (HTTPS I think). Plus every few minutes I would get a prompt for my password.

So, with WGIC installed, proxy setup in IE and adding port 443 into the intercept settings for WWW Proxy I can also get access to the online yahoo/hotmail and trademe sites, plus my bank sites.... All in all I think the web is fully functional.

MSN Messenger also works, I have it setup to directly connect ie, no proxy mentioned in MSN connection settings. I dont have it listed in the WGIC (on client pc) I'm not sure then what connection method its useing, but it works, must be NAT??

The last, and hopefully my only problem is Outlook, I cant seem to get it to connect. I have an account with Yahoo that I used to be able to send/recieve from Outlook when I was useing MS's Proxy 2. However, I'm guessing there must be a way of configuring Wingate to allow me to do this?

I have read through these forums, and will continue to do so, it seems many people are haveing similar problems.

Thanks in advance
Gavin

Any application that loads WinSock will use WGIC unless you expressly exclude it from being used. You will only get NAT if you have set the WinGate Server to be your default gateway.

Made a little progress, I do have the wingate server as the gateway, and have outlook.exe listed as local in the WGIC.

I did discover that for some strange reason ports 25 and 110 were listed in the ENS port security LAN connections to the internet as being intercepted by the POP3 proxy server, and the POP3 proxy server wasnt installed!

After fixing that I can now recieve mail, but not send it. Would it have anything to do with port 25 needing to be open/re-directed elsewhere on the wingate server??

POP3 Proxy or the POP3 Server?

Are you using WinGate's mail server at all? If not, you can disable those services (POP3 + SMTP Server on the "System" tab in GateKeeper)

However, using NAT (Gateway with WGIC set to Local) it should all just go straight through to your regular mail server.
