ENS does not install

Postby Darr » Mar 19 08 9:35 pm

I tried adding this post to an existing thread about 5 days ago, but have yet to see a reply to it, so here it is in its own thread.

Posted: Mar 15 08 9:05 am Post subject: ENS Not Installed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have this problem too. I upgraded from 6.0.3/? to 6.1.4/1099 because whenever I enabled NAT in ENS it was killing NetBIOS on my LAN (nothing could even ping wingate; disable NAT and voila - everything sees wingate machine), and ENS was there when that finished but it still had the same problem with NAT. Then noticed I had a newer version already, so installed that one (6.2.2/1137), and I know the ENS box was checked when I installed it, but after rebooting ENS is not installed. I ran the install again, still no ENS. I uninstalled completely, and because the instructions on the activation/deactivation dialog weren't clear I canceled that, but then the uninstall continued immediately without prompting me again... so I reinstalled AGAIN after rebooting (and yes 'ENS' was checked), put my key in and activated it, but still no ENS. I reinstalled over that and rebooted again.
Now I'm here asking what's going on. :-)

It's not asking me to install the mail server as previous versions did, though that IS installed; and even though it's showing me the ENS screen and I check the ENS box (but not the box below that because I have only a dialup connection here, so there's no way to maintain a connection while rebooting), there's no ENS installed when it's all done, no matter how many times I reinstall it.

---------------

Since then I did a complete wipe, deleting all references to wingate and qbik from the registry, the wingate folder, and anywhere else I could find a trace of it, then tried installing 6.2.2 and activating my key again... still no ENS installed. I had to uninstall and go back to 6.1.1/1077 to get ENS to finally appear.

Another problem is the standalone Advanced Options program does not import the previously exported configuration correctly. When I tried to use that function not only did it not import the extra services and mappings I've created (news server, POP3 and SMTP from/to multiple ISPs, et cetera), it wiped out the 'stock' services that were already there... after I used that the Services tab was blank. Registry editor imported them back in just fine, fortunately.

Still, in 6.1.1 I'm back to the original problem I had that caused me to start trying to upgrade wingate - as soon as I enable NAT in ENS and then connect to an ISP with DUN it causes the wingate machine to disappear from my LAN. No other machine can ping it by name OR by IP when NAT is enabled AND the dialup connectoid makes a connection. I can turn on NAT and everything can still ping wingate computer just fine; while it's dialing I can still ping wingate machine fine; as soon as dialup networking makes a connection, the LAN effectively goes dead to the internet... they can still ping each other, and the wingate machine can still ping any other machine on the LAN, but nothing else on the LAN can see the wingate machine or its IP. If I uncheck NAT without disconnecting the dialup, boom - the wingate machine is pingable again... Just killing the dialup connection does not make it pingable... the Support for multiple subnetworks (Router) option seems to have the same effect. I tried killing everything except Gatekeeper, Explorer and Systray in Close Programs, and the only services running are those shown in a screengrab that the boards won't let me post either as an attachment nor even as a filename on flickr dot com in this message.
But still no go.

It's not a Realtek card. The FA310TX uses a 'Tulip' chipset.
And I've tried reinstalling the drivers for that, too, btw, even though it's been running just fine for years.

I will paste in 2 'Advanced' dumps - 1 with NAT turned off and another with NAT enabled.

Hi

I don't have an immediate lead on the first issue (ENS not loading on 6.2), but I do on the original issue, that of your WinGate machine disappearing when you connect a modem.

Is your WinGate machine on a different LAN segment to the rest of your network?

Does the internal network adapter on the WinGate machine have a default gateway specified?

If you answered yes to both questions, then the problem is caused by the OS when you make a dialup connection.

When the connection is made, the OS adds a new default route to your system route table. This takes precedence over any pre-existing default route, including the one used to access your internal LAN segments.

The solution to this problem is to

a) remove the default gateway setting from the internal adapter. Default gateway is meant to be used only for access to the internet.

b) add specific routes in your WinGate machine route table to enable it to find the internal segments.

E.g, if you had an internal segment 192.168.2.x, and it was accessed via a router at 192.168.0.254 (on same segment as the WinGate machine), you'd go to the command prompt on the WinGate machine and type

route add -p 192.168.2.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.254

Actually if the above doesn't help, can you let us know the IP address your ISP allocates you (i.e. whether it's public or private), and check what the adapter usage is in WinGate when it's all connected.

If you go to the Network tab in GateKeeper, and look in the "usage" column, it should normally have "external" for the dialup, and "internal" for your LAN adapter.

No, all computers and devices on my LAN are in the subnet 192.168.233.0/24

adrien wrote:Does the internal network adapter on the WinGate machine have a default gateway specified?

No. I looked in the TCP/IP bindings for all network adapters on the wingate machine and there is not a default gateway specified in any of them, even when DUN is connected. (see also the ipconfig paste at the end of this message.) The DUN connectoids all have 'use default gateway on remote network' checked in their TCP/IP bindings in DUN. But the NIC's binding does not have any 'installed gateways' specified on the Gateway tab.

adrien wrote:If you answered yes to both questions, then the problem is caused by the OS when you make a dialup connection.

OK; but I answered no to both.

adrien wrote:When the connection is made, the OS adds a new default route to your system route table. This takes precedence over any pre-existing default route, including the one used to access your internal LAN segments.

The problem with that explanation is, the wingate machine DOES still see the internal LAN. If you refer back to the original reports, with NAT enabled and DUN connected the wingate machine (192.168.233.201) disappears from the REST of my LAN... i.e. no other machine on the LAN can see the wingate machine with NAT enabled and DUN connected. After a fresh reboot with NAT enabled and DUN not connected every other machine CAN see the wingate machine.

As soon as DUN connects the wingate machine disappears from the LAN, and does not appear again until either
A) the wingate machine is rebooted, or
B) NAT is disabled.

With NAT enabled and DUN connected, the wingate machine CAN still see (by browsing) all other machines in my LAN, and it can still ping them (by name or IP) -- no problem. But from every other computer, trying to ping (by name or IP) or browse to the wingate machine, all they get is 'Request timed out.' (ping), or
"\\[NB name] is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again." (Win95)
"Windows cannot find '\\[NB name]'. Check the spelling and try again, or try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking Search." (Win98se)
"\\[NB name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found." (XP and XP Pro)

As soon as I disable NAT on the wingate machine all the other computers can ping/see the wingate machine again.

Sorry if I did not make that clear in my previous posts, and hopefully I have explained it fully now.

But is there some persistent route I can add to make the other computers on my LAN always see the wingate machine?

adrien wrote:The solution to this problem is to

There is (and was) no default gateway specified in any of the TCP/IP bindings to any device (internal or external) in the network properties of the wingate machine.

I understand what that command does, but my entire LAN is on 192.168.233.0/24. No machine needs to be routed to find 192.168.233.201, which is the static IP of the TCP/IP binding to the NIC (internal adapter listed on line 5.16 of all the configs I pasted in) on the wingate machine.

When pasting in the configs, one variation I left out was
"NAT disabled, no DUN," but I compared it line-by-line to the "NAT enabled, no DUN" config and they are identical except:

8.06 NAT: Enabled, says
8.06 NAT: Disabled, instead.

The routing tables in section 7 do not change by enabling or disabling NAT, only when connecting to DUN do they change.

Whether NAT is enabled or disabled, the main change in the routing (besides the added routes/gateway of the ISP-DHCP address) when DUN connects is:
192.168.233.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.233.201 192.168.233.201 1

changes to
192.168.233.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.233.201 192.168.233.201 2

i.e. the metric changes from 1 to 2. But even if I change it back to 1, (e.g. route add 192.168.233.0 MASK 255.255.255.0 192.168.233.201 METRIC 1)
it does not make any difference... the wingate machine can still not be pinged (by name or IP) nor browsed from the LAN until I uncheck the box next to "General Purpose Internet Sharing (NAT)" in the ENS settings.

While going through the TCP/IP bindings for all the PPP adapter connectoids in DUN, I found a couple of them had static DNS servers specified, but I blanked those out and changed the setting on them to obtain the DNS server settings from DHCP, then rebooted, but that did not change anything... NAT plus connected via DUN still makes the wingate machine disappear from the rest of the LAN.

IPCONFIG /ALL also shows the same thing whether NAT is enabled or not:

That was done while connected via DUN, obviously.
But when not connected, the only difference is the settings for PPP adapter (0 ethernet) are blank like on the VPN PPP adapter (ethernet 1).

There currently is no router hooked to anything in my LAN. If I had a connection I could put the WAN port of a router on, I wouldn't need Wingate to share the internet connection across my LAN. That's what I'm trying to emulate with Wingate's NAT.

I do have a wireless AP hooked to the same switch the wingate machine is on... that's why I was in here a couple months ago looking how to make DHCP reservations by MAC address work (the undocumented solution: enter the MAC with no dots, no dashes, no colons between the 6 bytes). Prior to adding the AP I just used static IPs on everything, but have since switched to only the wingate machine and the AP having static IPs... everything else gets its IP from Wingate's DHCP server.
Still, the wingate machine disappears from ALL machines on the LAN when DUN connects with NAT enabled, not just from any laptop[s] connected via the AP at the time.

To answer the 2 questions in your followup message:

the IP assigned by my ISP is dynamic, typically from the 216.93.0.0/16 block (when I use the Voyager796 connectoid).
If I dial the other PoP that's local to me (Voyager628 connectoid) it can come from a different block... but I rarely use the 628 PoP; only when the PoP in exchange 796 is down.

As shown in sections 5 of the configs I have posted previously, the (Dialup) connectoids are listed as external, and the NIC is seen as internal by Wingate.

Thanks for the reply, and I'm standing by for further instructions. :-]

Just in regards to the issue with ENS not loading from WinGate 6.2.2 on Windows 98, I have seen this issue in the past. Our solution was to replace the ENS driver with one from an older version of WinGate (6.1.4 was the one that got used, but 6.2.0 or 6.2.1 might also work, I would have to check).

If you would like to try using an older driver in your WinGate installation, I can send you an older driver by email with instructions on what to do with it.

Yes, please.

Is it that the newer versions of qbikhk98.vxd just won't load in Win98, or are the later Wingate installation packages not installing it to %windir%\system\, or is it not being registered correctly, or what?

Thanks.

It seems that the 6.2.2 driver just doesn't correctly on Windows 98. I tested this in a virtual machine and found that the 6.2.1 driver works fine with the 6.2.2 engine.

Replace your existing qbikhk98.vxd driver with the one below. The driver can be found in your c:\windows\system folder.

Just doesn't ''what?'' correctly?

Hopefully the installer puts it in %windir%\system instead, since the OS on my wingate machine is in the C:\W98 folder (unlike microsoft, I -- and my CD/DVD burning software -- prefer shorter paths).

Thanks for the file. I'll try it again today. :-]
