Wingate server stop responding

Postby wiser2708 » Nov 23 04 4:25 pm

I have very serious problem with wingate server in my office. For almost 2 weeks I find that our wingate sever stop responding and each time I try to login, there is an error message appear:
"There was a problem conncecting to the server. No data was received from the server during authentication. Check the spelling or your user name".
This problem appear twice or thrice a day. I cannot stop or start the wingate engine.
The only solution is only restart the PC, and it's really annoying.
I really appreciate for any suggestion.

NB: we use 4.3.0 version

That is a clasical deadlock. Between 4.3, 5.x and 6.x we have fixed a fair number of them. You can upgrade to 6.x with your current license key - which will give you the advantage of the bug fixes.

Thank you for your fast reply.
Another question about installation :)
Is that OK if i install the new wingate ver 6.x over my current wingater server without uninstall first?
can i use the wingate 4.x license for wingate 6.x version?
Thanks in advance for your next reply.

Yes, normally those installations will go seamlessly. The Version 6.x installation will prompt you to backup your existing settings - which I'd recommend you do. (In case you need it again)

Yes, a WinGate 4.x license can be used with WinGate 6.x. During the installation WinGate will require you to activate your license. So, you must have an internet connection available during the installation.

I've tried to install wingate server ver6.0.3 but i cannot activate my license and the error message appear:

"Connecting to activation server activation.qbik.com
activating key------------------------------------------
Unable to connect to activation.qbik.com on port 443
the server name or address could not be resolved (12007)
Connecting to activation server activation.qbik.com
activating key------------------------------------------
Unable to connect to activation.qbik.com on port 80
the server name or address could not be resolved (12007)
errors in processing run
use email activation "

What's going on with my internet connection? I can use IE normally and no problem with browsing.
If I cannot use online activation, could you tell me how to use e-mail activation like it mentioned above?

Looks like there's a DNS problem there - try adding a line:
210.55.214.103 activation.qbik.com

to \WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

It seems as if you can reach the normal Qbik website, at the very least. Is your IE set to proxy through the local machine?

If that is the case - you will need to temporarily disable that - so you can activate the product. (We ran into that today with the same error messages in the QA Lab)

You can use the "Options" button to select how to activate (Online or via Email). However, you'll only get a response to email activations in normal Qbik Business Hours. (Listed on our Support page)

at last it works.
I do nothing, just start the process from the begining. Thanks for your kind support.
By the way I've read about "reduced features" if we're using wingate 4.x's License in Wingate 6.x version.
Do this "reduced features" will affect on my wingate 6.x performance?
Do you mind telling me what kind of features that are restricted by wingate 6 using wingate 4's license?

You'll get the same features you had - but you won't get the new features.

Once again, Thank you very much for your suggestions!!!!!! I really appreciate it.

Dear all,

Today we find another problem. Wingate internet client (WGIC) cannot found the wingate server. I've start the GDP and Winsock redirect service but it doesn't help at all.
Any suggestions? btw the proxy server is working perfectlly.

Is your client NT based? (NT, 2k, XP or 2003)

Try this - open the control panel applet. Switch to the "Servers" tab. Do you see your server listed there? If it is - click OK. (Be sure to click OK)

I think this is my network problem, because my wingate server (win2000 server) doesn't appear in my Network place ( I use win2000).
That's why I couldn't see server list in my WGIC "servers" tab.
Any ideas?

Double check adapter useage (In GateKeeper - open the properties of each of your network cards to ensure that they are marked correctly for "internal" and "external")

Secondly, do you have a Realtek 8029 card in your server?

Last thing, can you ping the internal IP of the server?

We don't use realtek card in our server and I can ping Internal IP server. Networks card in gatekeeper configured corretly.
I didn't see anything wrong with my wingate setting.
I think the problem is windows server because I can ping wingate server from my PC.
Please help!!

Can you email me a copy of the results of an "ipconfig /all" run from the command prompt? (Otherwise, post it here if you're comfortable with that being visible)

I'm sorry, my boss didn't allow me to do that. But I saw something wrong after ipconfig /all. There is NETBIOS over TCP/IP: disabled.

Get the properties of the appropriate Network Connection (Usually Local Area Connection, etc.)

Go to TCP/IP - open properties for it.

Click "Advanced"

Switch to the "WINS" tab

At the bottom, you'll see "NetBIOS setting". My machine here is set to "Default" which, because I have a static IP means it is enabled.

Now I can see another computer from my server but still i cannot Net use \\server_IP from another computer. The same error still appears.
Any suggestions? is it really important for you to see the result of Ipconfig /all? if you insist I'll try to convince my boss as long as it save.

Only reason I wanted to see ipconfig was for the make + model of network cards. We saw the exact same behavior yesterday (We could ping, etc.) on one of our QA machines. After a bit of investigating we discovered it used a network card chipset based on the 8029 Realtek series - when we then switched that option on in "Advanced Options", everything began working again.
