Socket Error 10049 with web proxy

Postby markrlondon » Jun 20 08 6:02 am

I am attempting to test Wingate 6.2.2 Build 1137 (30 day trial licence) on XP SP2 as a front end proxy for a web server. This is intended to receive incoming HTTP requests pn port 80 from the Internet in general and to transparently forward the requests to a web server elsewhere. (I.e. It is intended to be conceptually similar to "non-proxy requests" for POP3 and FTP which I am also testing and which work successfully). I understand that this is what Reverse Proxy in the WWW Proxy server is intended to achieve.

When I test this I always get an error like this in the client web browser:

Code: Select all
Socket Error 10049 {Thd 2680} [socket #A78, 0.0.0.0:1209 to :0]

Questions:
a) Is Wingate intended to be able to provide this type of transparent HTTP proxying functionality?
b) If Wingate is intended to be able to do this is there a workaround? I saw someone with a similar error in an earlier forum post but the build of 6.2.3 that seemed to cure their problem is no longer available.
c) Is this likely to work better on Windows 2003? We intend to run this live on 2003 but are currently testing on XP SP2.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Aha, found a fix: It was a firewall issue I think. Once I added a rule to the Port Security tab to allow port 80 traffic to flow in the correct directions it started to work fine.
