clients have no connection

Postby bcs » Oct 21 05 6:27 am

I've seen this problem listed here, and in fact had it before in April of this year, but I've tried everything I can think of, and it's still not fixed. Friday everything was working fine, all clients had full connectivity, and Monday it was gone. As far as I know, nobody had access to the server to make any changes.

Server and clients are all running Win98 SE. We have Wingate version 6.0.3. We are connecting using the Wingate client programs on all the client machines. As of Monday, there is no connection for e-mail or browsers for any client machine, although the server with Wingate on it connects as usual.

We use a filtering service for browsing, so we are using a cascading proxy for WWW access.

I've checked the Networking settings, and they seem to be correct as far as internal/external. The firewall does seem to be blocking lots of things, but even when I temporarily turn it off, the clients still can't connect.

Please advise--and thanks.

Hi,

Can you ping the server from the client machines and vice versa? Can you ping by name or just by IP address?

Can you ping www.google.com from the server? If that works try from the client machines. If that doesn't try pinging google's IP address (which you would see when you sent the ping from the server). Does pinging by IP address work?

If it does but pinging by name failed it suggests that you have a problem with your DNS configuration.

If pinging by IP address does not work you have a problem connecting through the WinGate server.

If you look on the activity screen in GateKeeper do you see the ping attempts from the client machines? They should show up as a NAT connection.

Are your network interfaces listed properly as internal and external? Your LAN adapter should show as internal and your internet adapter should show as external.

Also - if you log into GateKeeper, does it look normal?

Are there any system log messages in GateKeeper?

The server can ping the client by ip and by name. It can ping google by ip and by name.

The client can ping the server by ip and by name, but can ping google only by ip. If I try to ping www.google.com I get "unknown host www.google.com."

When the client tries to ping google by name, Gatekeeper shows "DNS: a lookup "www.google.com" in the activity pane.

I see the ping to google's ip in Gatekeeper, but not the ping from client to server.

Yes, network interfaces are set correctly.

When I first log in to Gatekeeper, I get two system messages; this has been happening ever since I upgraded to 6.0.3 in January. Both have "AntiVirus" as the object, and the message is "Unable to locate PluginDKAV.dll in any of the search paths. Plugin will not function." I don't think that has anything to do with this problem...?

Otherwise, Gatekeeper looks normal.

If you can ping google by ip, but not by the domain name, you have a DNS problem.

1. Is the DNS service started in WinGate?
2. Are the clients configured for DNS correctly; has a new DHCP server been activated somewhere else on network, it could be passing out incorrect details?
3. Can you set your ISP's DNS server in a client machine and test if it works?

Please see suggestion 3 in this knowledge base article for trouble shooting a NAT connection: http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ils&_i=123

You should be able to fix that by reinstalling KAV.
