Using the FTP Proxy

Postby baumann30 » Mar 04 06 6:51 am

Excuse me my stupid question:
how can I login ...the answere from the server is: bad login, format is: user@host:port (that's it what cuteftp is showing me)
what means host...please tell me an example

Is Wingate standing for an complete FTP server or do I have to install another software like GuildFTP behind WG on my computer. I did so but I never succeded in login from outside...GuildFTP sees the the user but the user do not see any folder... I tried this with a friend of mine , but he only tried it with InternetExplorer from Microsoft with this link:(ftp://name:password@my_domain)

I would be very thankful for some explanations or examples....

WinGate does not provide a standalone FTP server; however it can act as a proxy for connecting to other FTP servers.

In your first example you need to change the login details for connecting through a proxy. The new format becomes: "user@host:port" as you see. The host is the actual FTP server you want to connect to, for example:

someone@ftp.site.com:21

It will then prompt for a password as normal. In terms of your second problem. When requesting a directory listing you will need a secondary channel open for the data to travel through.

From the sound of it this is not happening. Were there any firewall hits at the time the user attempted to retrieve a directory listing from GuildFTP?

Thanks a lot for your kind replay.
So I have deleted the proxy ftp service on Wingate (as a first step) hoping it would be possible to connect directly to my ftp server (GuildFTP) running on my pc...
but no luck, I can see the user attempting to connect in GuildFTP program, but he gets no listing of the directory.
When I do this locally in my little network from another pc I succeed in typing:
ftp://user:password@172.16.1.1. ...everything is ok

I have forwarded port 21 (is it enough ?) to the ftp server, but I have no idea what to do else...there is no extra firewall between me and my "guest".
Will keep on trying....next time I will take a look at the firewall report to see if there is any hit.

Greetings
