Computer unknown in History

Postby ngtech » Jul 05 06 7:22 pm

Hi,
The history show most of the computer name as unknown. Certain PC sometime show unknown sometime can identify the computer name.

Previously work well. What I remember is I cleared HKLM\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\Wingate\DHCP\Leases & restart. I thought it would be able to identify after the client pc rebooted but this is not the case.

Pls advise.

Though I am still evaluating the software but I am really interested to buy the software. The software is powerful & features packed, but why are the support so unresponsive. It seems like the staff replying base on their mood.

Hi,

Do your client machines use DHCP for IP allocation?

In regard to the support issue:

This forum is free, mostly user-to-user support. For the customers who purchased wingate and experience problems we have special, internal support group. However, all our support team members as well as the developers are very active on this forum as well - however, it might take a while for us to run some tests and reproduce the problem, flagged by a user - but we are trying to attend all calls for help in the most timely manner.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay - it might be the case of computers not being registered long enough to advertise their presence with WINS - does history start showing computer names after some period of time?

As a matter of fact I was incorrect - at least partially. Can you try one simple thing with your machines - change a machine name to something simple, like AAA and see if it is reported properly.

Hi

THere are several methods WinGate uses to try and determine the windows machine name of a machine.

1. If the client uses WinGate as a DHCP server, then WinGate will learn the name then

2. If the client connects, WinGate will attempt a reverse DNS lookup. If the name is resolveable by DNS this way then we know the name. This can happen if for instance the WINS network enumeration is running in the system.

however if WINS network enumeration isn't finding the machines, then the reverse DNS method won't work.

So do these machines show up in the network panel in GateKeeper.

Thank both of you.

I re-setup in another PC & the problem gone. I think the culprit is the advance settings which I playing around in previous setup.
