External DNS Server

Postby SuperJ » Jul 25 06 10:31 pm

Hi,

How do I create a mapped link to an external DNS server? Under General->Enable Default Mapping To:
- which ip should i use, is it my external dns server?
- what should the port be, UDP or TCP and is it 53?

What Adapter should I bind to, my external ADSL USB adapter or my internal ethernet adapter? Also, is it necessary to bind to the loopback adapter?
Finally, will all the PCs on my internal network be able to resolve names at the same time using this mapped link?

Thank you for you cooperation.

Hi,

Which version of Wingate are you using?

I suggest an upgrade to V6.1.3 if not already.

Any reason why the existing DNS isn't what you require or for that matter the DNS / WINS Resolver in V6.x.

Re: External DNS Server

Hi,

I am using a version 6 build. The DNS service on wingate works for me. However, I am using a very slow machine(Celeron 333Mhz) as my router and would like to have a minimal number of services running on it. That is why I would prefer to use my ISP's DNS server.
... so can anyone answer my questions in the original post?

Hi there

From a WinGate/Machine resource point of view there is no difference between using a UDP mapping (port 53) to an external DNS server, and using the DNS service in WinGate. (They both still have to handle the connection)

Using the DNS service in WinGate is a better solution since it is written specifically for this purpose, and will handle the DNS automatically as part of a clients Internet request, if the client is configured to use WinGate for its DNS resolution.

For greater DNS control, you can specify preferred external DNS servers that WinGate can use for DNS Resolution in the DNS/WINS Resolver in GateKeeper.
