Client's antivirus cant update thru wingate

Postby AlansIT » Oct 03 06 1:03 am

Hello Adrien and James,

My client's notebook accesses the internet thru a Wingate proxy server, and all is well in that regard. However, when he tries to update his AVG antivirus, the firewall blocks it. I have tried it with him logged on and accessing the internet, but it still wont update. If I bypass the proxy, it updates OK.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, guys.

Hi Alan,

I just downloaded AVG free edition, installed it on a WinXP box setup for:
1. NAT Only.
2. WWW Proxy Server only.
3. WinGate Internet Client only.

--> The free edition updates fine for me; it was only using port 80.

a) Can you let us know what port numbers are hitting on the firewall?
b) Can you let us know the connection method your client is using; WWW Proxy / FTP Proxy / NAT / WinGate Internet Client?
c) Does the History tab of WinGate indicate what port it is trying to connect to?
d) Could you check in the System Messages tab that it is not an authentication problem?
GateKeeper --> View menu --> System Messages

Thanks for the reply, James.

I will check for the things you mentioned when I visit the client in 2 days. In the meantime, the authentication is something that may be related. I noticed that even though the client computer had authenticated for internet access, while he was trying to get his updates, the system messages said that authentication was not present, or something like that (I am working from memory here). I just assumed that if he was authenticated for internet access that this would carry thru to the updates, and was puzzled by the system messages. Is this a clue? More info to come after I next visit the client.

Regards

Alan
