Socket errors fix, I like to share!

Apr 04 07 10:06 am

Ok, so wingate has been working great, and all of a sudden, the internet slows down, my users cry, and I start clubbing them. I look in the wingate logs, and the DNS log is complaining about bounces, and the www proxy log is complaining about socket errors.

I tried manually adding DNS entries, clearing cache, turning off cache, deleting history.dbx(?), rebooting, switching dns entries, start/stop service, clearing route table, updating wingate from 6.2 to 6.2.1.....uhhh..what else...:)

What happened? Who knows...but I found the fix. I had to go into www proxy service, and goto gateway on the left, and change the connection scheme from "use any available" to "use specified connections in any order" and point it to the WAN adaptor.

After that, BAM my internet is fast and working like it should, and actually seems faster than it has ever been.

Just thought I would share this.

Any clues why all of a sudden this would happen, when everything had been working just fine?

Are you running XP service pack 2?

wondering if you are hitting the max limit on half open connections and XP is choking your connection rate.

If it is, it logs things in the event log.

Otherwise I can't imagine why specifying a particular gateway would make any difference - if that was your only gateway before, then all it does is ensure that that is the gateway you'll be using (sets the next hop MAC to the gateway MAC address, and makes sure it goes out the correct interface).

Hmm no

No I'm running win2k sp4 with wingate on it.

It's wierd isn't it? I don't understand, but as soon as I set that it worked.

Nothing has changed on the server at all.
