Email problems

Feb 11 04 5:16 pm

Hi, can somebody please help me?
I am currently responsible for a small business peer to peer network with wingate 4.5.1 server running on a W2000 machine. That machine currently has 2 email addresses set up with OE. I currently have a requirement to set up another email address on one of the network PCs running XP Pro.
I have set up the XP machine with the account details in OE and have set up the gateway machine with SMTP service. When I try to access the email from the XP machine I get an error saying that the host could not be found, it listed the account name and protocol POP3, port 110.
I don't know if the error is in the gateway set up or the XP machine.
The network PCs don't use wingate client but NAT.

Hi

Does web surfing work? Sounds like OE is complaining of not being able to look up the name of the POP3 server you are trying to connect to to retrieve your mail. This is normally because of one of

1. Wrong name specified does not exist
2. DNS configuration problem (in which case web browsing wouldn't work either unless IE is configured to use a proxy).

Thanks for your reply.
Web surfing works fine from both server and other machines on network.
What name are you referring to?

The DNS name of your POP3 server, e.g. mail.host.com or something similar.

In The properties of the account menu item in Outlook Express
on the server tab the settings are:

Incoming mail server is POP3
Incoming mail(POP3) is "mail.acr.net.au"
Outgoing mail(SMTP) is "mail.acr.net.au"

On the SMTP proxy server on the gatekeeper
The general tab
Support outbound mail via ISP mail server is checked
Outbound server is "mail.acr.net.au"

Hope this gives you enough info
