Terminal Services through Wingate

Feb 27 04 8:03 pm

Hi,

I need to know if I can configure my WinGate for using Terminal Services.

Actually I am running a small office network and 1 or 2 users on my network use TS to connect to a Bank.

Currently these users use my router ip as the gateway to connect the internet and I have no monitoring on them.

Tell me if I can put them on WinGate so that they can use the TS and at the same time I can monitor their activities.

Thanks

Hi there Faisal

The scenario that you are describing should be achievable through WinGate.

I have tried a similar type of setup and it has worked.

The WinGate server should have two NICs(network interface cards).
One attached to the router and one to the clients on the LAN. The clients should have private IP addresses in the same range as the LAN interface on the WinGate server, eg (192.168.1*).

The clients DNS and Gateway entries should be set to the IP address of the LAN interface on the WinGate server, and this will allow them to use the Nat (network address translation) method of connection through WinGate.

The other NIC on the WinGate server will be configured with a private IP address in the same range as the router and have the router's IP address assigned as its entries for DNS and Gateway.

This ensures that client Internet requests will be sent by WinGate to the router and the Internet for resolution.

When configuring the clients for Terminal Server access, in the Terminal client setup the external IP address of the banks terminal server (as normal) should be specified. Because this address is external WinGate will forward it to the router and inturn the Internet /Bank terminal server.

Obviously you will need to redirect the appropriate port traffic for terminal services (port 3389 I think) in the routers firewall back to the IP address of the WinGate machine. (you will need to check your router docs on how to do this this)

Hope this helps
Erwin
