Hello Friends,
Can any one tell me or guide me to a resource to setup email sever / pop3 / smtp to handle intarnet as well as internet mails.

Hi Jose,

we have a similar scenario here. We are running a mailserver (MDaemon) on the same server with Wingate.

In Wingate we have a POP3 Proxy with the fiollowing settings:

Service Port: 110
Delimiter: #
Non Proxy requests: Pipe through to Server 127.0.0.1 on Port 8110

Like this Intranet requests are piped through to the internal mailserver and when the mailserver checks for mail on your providers server (on port 110) this goes out to the internet.

For SMTP we have a SMTP-Proxy with the following settings:

Service Port: 25
Support outbound mail: SMTP server of your provider on Port 25
Support Inbound Mail: 127.0.0.1 on Port 8025

Like this Intranet SMTP is redirected to the internal mailserver and Internet Mail is sent from internal mailserver to SMTP server of the provider. For us this scenario works fine and handles a volume of approx. 200 in/out mails per day.

The mailclients on the workstations are setup to receive mails (POP3) on port 8025 of the internal server computer (in our case 192.168.58.12) and send mail to our internal server (again 192.168.58.12 - replace this with the IP number of your server) on port 8110.

If you are not running an internal mailserver on your server computer the setting may however be different ...

No problemo! Yes I know Wingate has a built in mailserver which however is not as versatile as other products. Anyway I don't know how to set-up wingates mailserver but I am sure you will find all necessary info in the help files of Wingate. Also there is a manual available for download on the Qbik website.

Ok I assume this is the scenario, a lan has four clients.

The users are east, south, north and west for example.

All are in the server user database [Wingate as pc / unc name].

All five can POP3 to each other with the Wingate server user say being administrator.

Set default domain in GateKeeper to the unc of this machine [¿wingate¿]

On north for example set a client application to have an email address of NORTH@WINGATE user name NORTH, point to ip or unc for Wingate mail server.

Enter appropriate network wide password for this user and email should be two way.

Same on other clients.

Every thing is perfect. I can send test mails from my client PC to the Wingate\mail\pop3 folder. But not possible to pop or retrieve these message from these folders to outlook.

My local domain name is abc.com defined in wingate mail server. Corresponding users are generated in wingate server under the domain as user@abc.com etc...

Outlook configuration is

password: ***

Hi Jose,

I think you must change the port settings in your outlook clients to 8110 (for SMTP) and 825 (for POP3 - however I suggest you change this to 8025 in both Wingate and Outlook as I believe port 825 is reserved for some other application). Like this Outlook will connect to the Wingate server. Wingate server uses port 110 and 25 to exchange mail with the mailserver of your provider and if you set ports 110/25 in Outlook, Outlook will not connect to Wingate server because here your internal ports are 8110 and 8025 ...

Hi Jose, try changing the pipe to 'hand over to internal mail server' let us know how it goes...

BTW: about ports, have configured many intranet mails, all are standard ports 25/110 for both remote pop mail and that exclusively handled by Wingate just accross the network.

Make sure the users are entered in Wingate's email tab and that the appropriate authentication is enabled.

Turn on debug logging for the POP3 proxy to see what is reported during a request.

Hi Jose,

I believe you must change Wingate settings as follows:

a) set your POP3 Proxy Service Port to 110 and "nonproxy requests" handover to internal mailserver

b) set your SMTP Proxy Service Port to 110, "support outbound mail via" smtp-server of your ISP, "support inbound mail via" IP number of your internal server port 8025

If that doesn't work I don't know ...

Ok Jose try change the Outlook port to 110, I cannot retrieve local Pop mail with the port of 8110 {whilst the remote PopMail [isp server] will work ok in this configuration}.

Hi Jose,

great that it's working now. What kind of feedback you want? With regards to e-mail I personally suggest to get away from Outlook as this is a rather "fat" piece of software and usually vulnerable to virus infections. Instead I suggest "The Bat!" which is lean, small and much less vulnerable. FYI I have no personal interests in The Bat! but I am using it for many many years and feeling very comfortable with it.
