What does no specific and cannot select mean?

Client usually cannot access internet through the gateway, but occasionally it can. Most frequent message in DNS Resolver log is like this.

03/14/04 01:14:13 Request: request [01882d9a] A lookup "www.symantec.com."
03/14/04 01:14:13 Error: bounce request [01882d9a]<1> to try 3 (no specific and cannot select)
03/14/04 01:14:13 Error: bounce request [01882d9a]<3> to try 4 (no known servers)
03/14/04 01:19:18 Request: request [01882d9a] A lookup "time.windows.com."
03/14/04 01:19:18 Error: bounce request [01882d9a]<1> to try 3 (no specific and cannot select)
03/14/04 01:19:18 Error: bounce request [01882d9a]<3> to try 4 (no known servers)

Why is it able to find the internet sometimes and not usually?

What does no specific and cannot select mean?

Thanks,

Henry

Hi there

This is a DNS Internal system message relating to the store of DNS servers that WinGate knows about and will use to satisfy DNS requests. Generally speaking these are merely the way that WinGate grades the reliability of these DNS servers resolving requests.

This could suggest in your case that the DNS server that WinGate is set to use or the one assigned by the ISP on the Internet connections interface is often not responsive or cannott give answers to DNS requests in a reliable manner.

You could try setting WinGate to use an alternative DNS server through entering a server in the DNS resolver in GateKeeper.

Hope this helps

Regards
Erwin
