VPN Drops Connection

Apr 13 04 10:34 am

Once again, I am hoping that someone here can help me. We have a3rd party application (which is basically a scaled down proxy server, used for sending off data to a portal). This application sits on a dedicated WinXP Home computer, and all it runs is this "scaled down" proxy. As well, it requires a VPN connection. I am able to successfully make the VPN connection (I set this up under the port security section of Extended Networking)(thanks to the QBik staff for help with this - original topic was at http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=1226&highlight=). What happens is that every 30 minutes or less, the VPN connection drops it's connection. Unfortunately, it's closer to 5-10 minutes when the computer is actually active forwarding off data to the portal - when it sites idle, it's closer to 30 minutes, but it never goes longer than 30 minutes before it disconnects. Fortunately, I have set it up so that it reconnects, but as I mentioned, the more active the computer is, the sooner it disconnects, which generally happens during data transmission. The fact that it disconnects means that the data has to be sent a second (and sometimes third) time. I know that the problem does not lie with WinXP Home - I have tried the application on Win2000 & WinXP Pro stations - same result. The problem doesn't seem to be with the network - we are the ONLY people having this problem. Is there some sort of setting in Extended Networking that would help to resolve my issue? Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes, I did encounter the same problem.
Set the ports that you are using for VPN, in the ENS tab in Wingate, to never time out.Add let's say port 1723 from to the internet or whatever and below you have an option that says Never Time Out.
Good luck

Aye, this problem has been fixed in the new releasee and the test driver can be sent to you.

Mendoza - thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, thta didn't work. I checked my setup, and I already had that in place.

Thanks anyhow.

Genie - if you could email that test driver to me, I really would appreciate it. I can't remember if, when I registered for the QBik message board, my email address was required. If you have it, would you mind sending it to me. If you don't have my email address, please let me know (I also sent you an email, so you should have my address there somewhere).

Cheers,

Genie - I hate to be a pain, but if you could forward that off to me, I really would appreciate it. Our office really needs to establish a reliable VPN connection ASAP!

Thanks,

Can I get a copy of this driver too. I am having the exact same problem and am having to run with 5.07 at this stage. It seems to be the only reliable version that still seems to allow VPN to connect and stay connected.

What Operating System are you guys running ?

Apr 20 04 11:13 am

Windows XP Professional here with all updates applied. I drop back to Wingate 5.07 and no problems, but anything later than that and it becomes unstable and VPN stops working.

Any chance this new driver could be available for download, or sent to me as well (I hate seeing the "me too" postings but...).

Just checking with the people in charge what the best plan is for this.

May 09 04 7:54 pm

Any word on this yet, it gets frustrating having to keep reconnecting the VPN connection at 2am when I get called from work to fix something.

Thanks,
Chad

Have you tried the new version 6.0? The driver now contains this VPN fix.

May 10 04 6:12 am

Actually I was really hoping that the functionality of the current version would be fixed before having to upgrade (and end up paying for) a new version. For me the current version seems to be stable and the VPN connection dropping has been the only negative.

Thanks,
Chad.

Can any of the Qbik staff please verify this, as well as if another beta version is going to be released soon?

Thanks,
Chad

Yes, the current beta (6.0) does containg the VPN fix.

Hi All

To upgrade will require an upgrade fee, however.

a) anyone who purchased upgrade protection within the last year won't need to pay for the upgrade
b) anyone who purchased WinGate since 1 April 2004 won't need to pay for the upgrade

We are also looking into options for continued use of old keys so that you don't need to pay for bug fixes. This is a bit more work though, since due to the extremely high level of piracy of WinGate, we need to change the way the key system works, and this would require us to block old keys. The only way around that would be to issue free upgrades to limited 6.0 keys which would disable some features in 6.0. None of these options are ideal. We are still investigating options for the finer details of this and will keep you all posted.

We are looking at releasing all this on 1 June.

And we are readying another beta for release in the next day or two.

I tried the Wingate 6.0 beta and my VPN problem with dropping out is fixed, well not really, now it won't connect at all. If I drop back to 5.07 again I am sure it would work....I don't really want to pay yet another upgrade fee for Wingate, I have been using it since 2.1 days and am happy with the function set that I have, all I want is to get to a STABLE version of 5.x. Have had no success with any upgrade since 5.07....was told that there was a new version of 5.2.x due but it appears that has gone by the boards

Wingate is the only application I have running on an XP Pro system.

Sure hope something happens with this soon, once again I am up at 1:15am fighting with Wingate trying to check things at work through the VPN connection for a few minutes at a time. I have really tried to do my part and be patient, especially since I have been using Wingate since version 2 and buying it since version 3. Seems like the "business" side is getting in the way of another good software product.

Jun 02 04 11:44 pm

Just upgraded to the latest 6.0.0 beta version and all my problems seem to have disappeared...might be worth a try...

Thanks for the info PAL, but I would still like to find out what the actual terms of using version 6 are going to be. If this was any other type of product then it could be returned for a refund or replaced with a new product if defects were found. If the new version will actually work with a version 5 license that is great, but I simply refuse to pay for a new version until there are new features/functionality that I will use.

Later,
Chad

I tend to agree on the pricing. I can't remember how many times I have paid for upgrades now but it is getting up there and each time it pushes the boundary of whether I should keep it or not. Considering that I am only running it for a home network I don't need a lot of the 'new' features, I just want the ones that I have to work...

Driver to fix VPN problem

Jun 09 04 4:42 am

Genie - please could you email that driver to me - I'm using Wingate 5.2.3 on a Windows 2000 machine (the Wingate server) and a Windows XP client. My VPN connections also drop.

Thanks.

Jun 09 04 9:15 pm

I to have paid for the various upgrades over the past 3 years and am a legitimate user, and a home user at that.
But now seem to see the I will have to pay more money to get this problem corrected. Surely this should be fixed under the current version.
Why not show good faith to those loyal customers and provide a working product fit for the job!

Jun 11 04 11:24 am

We are changing the key structure for version 6, but you will be able to run it with your version 5 key with reduced functionality, so there will be no charge for the bug fixes. Of course if you decide that you do want the added functionality of version 6 there will be an upgrade fee.

Regards,

Matt

Jun 11 04 1:03 pm

Thanks for the update Matt, but does that mean we will still have all the same functionality as we had in v5 by running v6 with "reduced functionality" or will we end up with less features in order to have the bug fixes? As a software developer I completely understand the need to limit old version support, but to stop fixing bugs as soon as a new version is *almost* ready is a bit soon...

Jun 15 04 2:06 pm

No, you should not lose any functionality, by reduced functionality I meant that you won't have access to the new features that are being added to version 6.

Matt

Jun 23 04 2:12 am

OK, I'll give the beta a try. Is there going to be a new beta released before the current one expires on July 01? I really don't want to take the chance of having it expire and lose internet access while going back to v5.

Thanks,
Chad.
