cannot block access to URLs

Apr 21 04 6:01 am

We are doing an evaluation of WinGate 5.2.3 for our offices and so far everything is working well, except that I cannot enforce restrictions on browsing.

I have tried adding entries to the ban list under policies, as well as adding filters to the www proxy server as described in the knowledge base article number 96 "blocking client access to specific urls and sites". So far, nothing works. Can someone point me to what I have misconfigured to keep this from working? Most clients are using wgic, but I changed one to nat to see if that helped, but had the same results. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

A couple of things to check.

In the Sessions tab of WWW Proxy do you have "Redirect ENS and WGIC sessions" checked.

In the Policies tab of WWW Proxy do you have "Default rights (System Policies)" set to "are ignored".

Those two are a good place to start.

Let us know how it goes.

Ignore was already checked, redirect was not. But there was no change when I checked it. The rights filters are still being ignored. I'm at a loss here. I have tried many variations of how I phrase the filters and still cannot block anything.

You might try the ban list under the Winsock Redirector Service > Policies. That worked for me.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, time ran out. Based on recommendations from a hired network professional, management decided to install a Fortigate hardware-based gateway.
