Hi !
I have been a user of WinGate to solve my internet connection sharing needs for quite a while. After I reinstalled windows on my PC however I've installed Wingate's latest version and nothing seems to work anymore !
I'm basically using WinGate as a software router. I've got a network of 2 pcs, the server has got a direct dial up connection to the internet via dsl. The client is connected via standard lan, no wireless or similiar setup. Both PCs are running Windows XP Professional, and the network is properly set up.
The Server has got WinGate Server software version 5.2.3 properly installed (default configuration)
HOWEVER : I can't get the client to connect to the internet no matter how hard i try. There's lots of problems each and every time.
Solutions without WGIC I've tried :
If I let DHCP handle IPs and Gateway configuration for the client :
The DHCP service doesn't seem to work at all... The IP assigned to the client is not in the same range as it is the case with the IP of the server (i.e. : server 192.168.0.1, client : 192.168.XXX.YYY), the subnetmask is not the same, and no gateway is assigned to the client at all ! I tried using ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew on the client, it told me that the client machine was unable to connect to the DHCP server. I can't even ping the server anymore (because of the different subnet mask i assume). Of course the client computer cannot access the internet.
If I try to connect via NAT :
All right, so i manually set the IP of the client to 192.168.0.2, the subnetmask to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway and DNS server to 192.168.0.1. This configuration should do the job, at least that's what i've read multiple times. I'm now able to ping the server and SOME very basic things seem to work. For example if I try to ping
www.cnn.com the DNS service will resolve
www.cnn.com to the appropriate IP on the client machine. I can't access any internet page via internet explorer tho, the loading process takes a LONG time, indicating that there is some type of data transfer going on, but then delivers a 404 error in the end. The gatekeeper at the server shows that bytes have been sent and received. Non IE applications behave even stranger. Some applications will connect to their respective servers, like ICQ. Others won't, or at least not properly. However, in ICQ, certain things will not be displayed correctly. There is for example this little ad in the top part of the ICQ windows. It doesn't get loaded, which I think is because of the use of the http protocol ? The whole thing might be related to wrong proxy setup, but if I enter the correct proxy at the client, it won't change anything either.
Using WGIC I've mostly gotten the same results then w/o it, using NAT only.
My second problem has to do with User authentifications :
I am using NT User Authentification and Gatekeeper shows any connecting user as a member of the group "Guests". Is this supposed to be this way? I thought ordinary "Users" would rather be the right group for them to be in. I swichted to the Wingate user db instead of the NT system recently, I was now able to get the user in to the right group, but that didn't solve any of my problems concerning the internet connection either.
I disabled the Wingate Firewall in the ENS menu and have set all the service/systems policies to "Everyone may use this service" (or w/e). I even gave the client administrator rights, but that didn't work out either.
Please Help !
