Setting IP addresses

How do I set the ethernet card IP address to 192.169.0.1 so Wingate will find it? Or am I completely out to lunch on how this is supposed to work?

I've had this running for months, system lost all it's networking info, rebuild in prgrogress. One last thing to get a system rebuild running, I'm missing this one little detail. I remember that I had trouble getting this to work on the initial install, forgot what the answer was.
