Yahoo and MSN Messenger connection drops

Jun 21 04 10:02 pm

Hi, recently we have been evaluating Wingate to handle our corporate internet sharing for possible adoption or purchase, however, our administrator has observed that computers using Yahoo or MSN messengers gets disconnected or its connection to the interner drops without any apparent reason at all, although there is active usage of the application it just disconnects af if there is no internet at all. What we do is to reconnect the messenger again but again after 5 -15 minutes it just drops. We use a 3COM 10/100 HUB and 2 10/100 CNET Switch to connect to the internet using only 1 server. There are at least 3 NETWORKS using the single connection: Please refer below the LAN configuration:

NIC1 on WINGATE SERVER
INTERNET << ADSL MODEM << WINGATE SERVER 5.2.3 << HUB (192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.255)

NIC2 on WINGATE SERVER
INTERNET << ADSL MODEM << WINGATE SERVER 5.2.3 << SWITCH1 (192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255)

NIC3 on WINGATE SERVER
INTERNET << ADSL MODEM << WINGATE SERVER 5.2.3 << SWITCH2(192.168.2.0 - 192.168.2.255)

Please take note that only a single connection is used for all 3 Networks, and an average of 40 computers are used.

Hi trialT...

Just out of interest, the timeout for the socks proxy service in Wingate, what happens if it is unchecked?

Report back and someone will take it further.

I recommended the solution you gave and our administrator is investigating it. Furthermore, we only allow certain ports like 80, 443, 25, 110, 2080, 53, 20-21, 5050, and 1863 for LAN connections to the internet and has leave out 1080 before, do you think that this has the effect of the connection drop? Lastly are we going to open up the ports 1080 also for LAN connections to wingate PC? As much as possible we are trying to secure our LAN from viruses and intrusions and so far this scheme has prevented much of the latest viruses and trojans from infecting our network.

So far it worked out just find when the timeout for the socks proxy server is unchecked, no longer are yahoo and MSN messengers quiting at an untimely manner.
