Wingate (I think) keeps appending .com to local machine name

Jul 10 04 1:21 pm

Hello,

I recently setup a webserver inside my lan and am having the following problem.

On the machine running the server, when I enter http://machinename on the browser, the browser returns http://machinename.com. If I disconnect the network cable, bring up the site on the browser once, and reconnect the cable, it works fine for a while but then starts doing the same thing.

I have the machinename in the hosts file pointing to localhost (127.0.0.1)but it doesn't seem to do any good.

Anyone know if this is a proxy server (Wingate) issue? I am not using the WGIC on this box. I did try it but it did not make a difference. Changing "bypass proxy server for local ..." on IE options tab did no good either.

Thanks,

Miky

Hi

WinGate will try a DNS lookup first for the name given before it tries appending anything like www. and .com to the name.

So this indicates that the name lookup may be failing, which is odd if you have the machinename in your hosts file on the WinGate server.

What OS is this on? Some OSes have issues with their hosts file, if there isn't a blank line on the end of it.

OS = XP Pro

I did have some blank lines at the end. I removed them but it had not effect.

tracert machinename returns 127.0.0.1 if that helps

Update: Also works fine when I am dialing out and LAN is disabled.
