We've been having file download problems recently after "autoupdating" to the latest Wingate version (5.2.3?). File downloads from Windows Update, Norton Antivirus, and similar sites work beautifully on each client PC; no problems at all. However, when a file is downloaded via an FTP server (Compaq's FTP site in particular), only about 3/4 of the file downloads, then it quits. If I download from the same Compaq FTP site directly to the Wingate server, the whole file comes through OK. We never had any problems like this before; it just started recently. Nothing has been changed on the Wingate server (I did try some of the that are on this forum, but none of them worked so I switched all the settings back).
We connect via a T1, and Wingate's FTP server is set to Port 21, as it has been since the day I first installed it (almost 2 years ago). We do not have ANY plug-ins installed in Wingate! The only change that has been made is the "autoupdate" that Wingate did to download the latest version. Is there a bug with this version? Should I uninstall it and put the older version back? We need FTP to get updates from Compaq (as well as other sites).

Hi Pete,
We did have a problem with 5.2.3 if you didn't have Kaspersky AV installed, then FTP stopped downloading at 75% and waited to be scanned. You can check if this is the problem by installing KAV with a 30 day free trial license. This problem was fixed in the version 6 beta so you can upgrade to the Release Candidate which should take care of it too.
Regards,
Matt

Thanks for your input. I don't like the sound of this at all. It almost sounds like Wingate has now changed their software to require extra-cost plug-ins to make their "upgraded" software work the way past versions did, without plug-ins.
Maybe I should try the version 6 beta; hopefully the release-version of 6 will work without plug-ins. If not I'll either tear it all down and go back to a pre-5.2.3 version, or go to a different proxy server software altogether. Even the built-in Windows Internet connection sharing is better than the version of Wingate we have now. Not a happy camper at all.....

I think you have misunderstood.
A bug in 5.2.3 is fixed in 6.0.
In 5.2.3 if you don't have the plugin it is a problem.
In 6.0 if you don't have the plugin it is not a problem.

Right, but what I'm saying is that the pre-5.2.3 version we had was problem free, without plug-ins. Now, 5.2.3 apparently needs a plug-in as a temporary fix or "workaround" for problems that it has.
It's great that version 6 fixes the bugs without adding a plug-in, but I don't like it when "new and improved" software comes out that causes problems, even if the upgrades are free. They cause a lot of headaches for an IT that are hard to solve, escpecially when nothing appears to be wrong in any of the Wingate settings.
I will definitely disable automatic updating when version 6 is ready and check for updates manually in the future.
