problem using wingate

Jul 29 04 4:13 pm

hello,,
i am using the last version of wingate, but other than surfing nothing works on the client machine

I am using NAT, i tryed WGIC, but to no avail.
The wingate machine is xp pro with this tcp-ip config/
ip : 192.168.0.1
submask : 255.255.255.0
everything else is blank(gateway, dns)

the client is xp home:
ip : 192.168.0.2
submask : 255....
gateway : the wingate machine
dns : the wingate machine

As i said, i am using NAT,, but on the client,, only IE is working properly,, when i try msn or yahoo or all seeing eye, or any internet games, it doesnt works.
I am not sure if the gatekeeper config is right,, i opened ports in the firewall but nothing, i completely disabled the firewall but nothing,, on the client i used the wingate proxy to get msn connecting but nothing.

On the activity tab in gatekeeper, i see the client using NAT when on IE but nothing else, not even trying to connect to a msn server..

In the port security tab on the wingate firewall,, i see that the default action for "lan connection to internet" is "allow" ,, so why should i add ports range while the default action for every lan machine trying to cnnect to the internet is on "allow" ?

iam a bit lost :)

please help me,, thk you.

up!
please help !

How is you client connected - NAT, WGIC, proxy?
Make sure that the interfaces on Wingate machine are set up correctly (internal/external).

HI

I am suspicious that the reason you can surf is because the connection is being intercepted by the WWW proxy, which then makes the connection out as if from the WinGate machine.

If the NAT part of WinGate has trouble using your internet connection, then often connection interception through proxies gets around this.

I am picking that if you disable transparent proxy in the sessions tab of the WWW Proxy, then your clients won't be able to surf either.

On the properties dialog for your internet connection, is this shown as a dialup, or a LAN connection? If LAN, do you see an advanced tab on this dialog?

IE on the client machine is not using WWW proxy.
As i said, its using NAT for surfing, because when surfing on the client machine, i see that it is using NAT on the activity tab in gatekeeper.
Transparent redirection is already disabled in the session tab of the WWW proxy, i never changed it and i am able to surf on the client machine.

You mean that proxy could make problems for NAT ?

"On the properties dialog for your internet connection, is this shown as a dialup, or a LAN connection? If LAN, do you see an advanced tab on this dialog? "
I am using xp pro,, and i have 2 "connections"(my xp is french), i have "adsl usb modem" that is shown as connected, and i have "ATM connection" that is shown as "activated".
The 2 have a "advanced" tab, but nothing is enabled, firewall nor connection sharing.
BTW the firewall for the LAN connection is disabled too.
Is that what you asked ?
BTW i have zone alarm on the wingate machine, but i close it when i am on wingate.

Thank you for your replies Adrien and Genie.

:) Well, the first question should be "What version of Wingate are you running?"

Jul 30 04 11:46 pm

A thing that could help you finding out what is happening :
when i toggle wgic in the client to use it and when i launch IE, it says " connecting to server WINGATE" (because i named the wingate machine " WINGATE") and everything is fine, i can surf ; but when i try msn messenger for example( stil in WGIC mode) it says "unable to find server WINGATE"

So why, in WGIC mode, for IE it finds the server and for any other internet apps it does not find it ?

BTW when i toogle WGIC to not use it on the client, i see on gate keeper that the client uses NAT, so that is fine for that.

Jul 30 04 11:48 pm

i use version 5.2.3 build 901
thank you :)

Jul 30 04 11:49 pm

Oh, I see - make sure that msn is on the list of allowed applications.

Jul 30 04 11:53 pm

Sorry - my last suggestion will not work - it's for v6 only. My suggestion would be to install Wingate 6 - both on the server and the client. We made quite a lot of changes in how WGIC is handled.

Jul 30 04 11:54 pm

yes it is, i knew you would ask that :) and with global acces.
i added WINGATE server in the list of server to search for but to no avail.

Jul 30 04 11:58 pm

Ok i will install V6 and i will tell you what is happening.

Jul 31 04 12:56 am

So, i installed V6 but its the same, same WGIC problem.
IE is working fine when the toggle is on, but msn or yahoo is telling me that the server WINGATE cannot be found.
Everything is the same,, when i toggle WGIC off, client is using NAT for surfing.

I am wondering why the proxy is not working for msn,, i mean if i put in it the wingate machine ip and port 80, it should work...

Could we please find a solution before my 30 trail days are over ? :)

Proxy port should not matter in your situation since you are using WGIC... Let us run a couple of tests here first...

Jul 31 04 3:12 pm

check also for firewall hits, and check what type of usage your adapters are set to..

Hello,
So i am still lost :(
Really, i don't know what to do, there is a weird thing that is bloking something somewhere :)
The question is what thing is bloking what and where LOL
Bah...
Could it be a virus or worm or something like this that have messed up the net config?

Hi

Would it help if I connect to your server from here and take a look?

If you email the details to adrien at qbik dot com, then I can connect and see if I can see any immediate problems.
