MX Lookup timed out

Aug 09 04 5:57 am

I am getting the following errors in my Wingate SMTP server.
I am using version 6.
I can pull my e-mail from a 3rd party mail server ok.
I can't send.
I don't think my ISP will let me send, and the 3rd party mail server will only allow delivery to it's own accounts.
I try to deliver directly, but that doesn't work either.
Is this MX lookup something that I can fix?

What does the NDR say?
Yahoo could be rejecting mail from your mail server based on the reverse lookup of your e-mail address. If your mail server is not an MX server for your e-mail address it may get rejected by many mail servers. This is only going to get worse as SPF gets more widespread.
Some ISP's, mostly cable providers do block port 25 on incoming connections, you would have to check your ISP's terms of service agreement to see if you are allowed to have an SMTP server. But, you should be able to send mail if you can find an SMTP server that will accept mail from your mail server. If you don't have a reverse lookup you may need to use a Smart Host. A Smart Host is an SMTP server that you can use to relay mail to and from your mail server, many ISP will let you use one of their mail servers as a Smart Host.
Some ISP's won't let you even run an SMTP server Road Runner is the worst of these.

Hi

MX lookups for yahoo failing normally means there is some DNS configuration problem, as we can assume that yahoo is probably still there.

WinGate uses its own DNS resolver for this MX lookup, so if there are any issues with that, then it will cause problems.

What are your DNS configuration settings on the winGate machine (TCP/IP settings for your external adapter etc). Do you have a manually specified DNS server in WinGate's DNS resolver? Normally this solves most problems, if you put your ISP's DNS server in there.
