enable xp firewall?

Sep 09 04 1:47 am

Is there any need to enable windows xp's firewall on clients while running wingate 5.2.3 on server?

If you are using ENS you must disable the XP firewall as they don't play well together.

G'day Larry,

Actually with SP2's new Security centre in the Notification area, I have found it essential for situations with 'wanabee admins' who will try to enable more or less security [depending on what they think they are trying to achieve] to implement a Group policy disabling the firewall [the first setting in the list does the trick] as well as a few other areas such as denying access to IE's Connection tab, ability to configure proxy denied, disable ICS, etc.

ENS and Firewall

Hi,

Is it necessary to enable ENS if our WG Server is already behind a CISCO Firewall?

Depends. ENS is Qbik's Extended Networking Service.

It gives you Firewall, NAT, VPN, Bandwidth control, etc. With version 6.0 it also provides additional information about adapters installed in the sytem because it receives more notifications than is generally available on R3.

If your CISCO Firewall is already providing an appropriate level of security for your organisation then you can disable the Firewall portion of ENS, but, as a policy we recommend that you keep ENS itself; simply for the large number of features it gives you.

Are you having problems with ENS, such as blue-screens or incompatibilities?

We regularly experience hang-up problem on our WG Server.

Hang-up problem. Is that a blue-screen of death - or a lock-up where WinGate refuses to do anything? Or does the physical system lock-up, so you can't use any Windows programs?

Sometimes the Server locks up but most of the time Wingate refuses to do anything especially every morning and we had to manually restart the Server for it to work again.

Yesterday, I disabled WG Firewall and until now we did not have any problem.
