Normally WinGate licenses do not expire. So there should have been nothing stopping your license from working, so long as there is no problem with the license.
There are upgrades available from version 5 to version 6, or you can activate a valid version 5.x key in WinGate 6.0 as well if you are happy to live without a couple of the newer features. The following link has more details:

PS, we didn't acquire WinGate - we always owned it. We simply terminated our distribution contract with our previous distributors.

However, you can use 6.0.2 with your 5.2.2 license key. You will not get the new features in 6.x, but you will get everything you had with 5.2.2
