initial setup - gatekeeper functionality

Feb 12 08 7:14 am

We are using WinGate on a trial basis. On initial installation the program properly detected our internal and external connections and client machines are able to access the internet, however, when we try to access Gatekeeper to fine tune settings and make adjustments it just shows as large grey box with none of the options visible.

In addition, the program is generating log files that take up a great deal of room on the hard drive and have to be deleted manually every few days or so in order to keep the program running. I'm assuming this is an issue we will be able to address once Gatekeeper is functioning properly, but I wanted to double-check to be sure.

Thanks--

That usually indicates that you have logged in with an account that does not have Administrator privileges; hence try using an Administrator account to login. If you are within an Active Directory environment then you need to make sure the WinGate is aligned to it; this is explained in the following section of the WinGate help file:
WinGate Help --> WinGate Security Model --> WinGate in an AD.

As for the large logfiles it seems that your 'Rollover logging' event in scheduler may have been deleted. If you open the scheduler and check for an item 'WinGate internal Maintenance' or 'Rollover logging / audit files' if this doesn't exist, Add an event, with two actions:

-Rollover log files; and
-Rollover Audit files

Once a month should make it a bit more manageable.

Even then it can be a bit difficult to decipher the information as it is very data intensive, quite a few of our users utilize a third party analyzer.

Thanks for the response. I never got to the point of setting up user accounts - this is how it showed up the first time I went to open Gatekeeper, and I believe it showed up as Admin when I first logged in.

When I'm in front of the machine tomorrow I'll see if I can figure out how to switch user accounts, otherwise do you think a re-installation would correct the login and Rollover logging issues?

There have been a couple of issues like this lately. Uninstalling then Installing WinGate has solved the problem in most cases. You could try simply loading a fresh configuration before reinstalling to make sure it's not a configuration issue.

To load a fresh configuration:
- Stop the WinGate engine
- Open regedit (start -> run -> regedit)
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software
- Rename the registry called "WinGate"
- Start the WinGate engine

When you start the engine a new config will be loaded. The username and password will be Administrator with no password.

If you still get a grey screen after logging in, reinstall WinGate.

Just wanted to let you all know I un-installed & re-installed the application and it appears to be displaying correctly. The "rollover logging" option is also showing up under Scheduler, so hopefully that issue will be resolved as well.

Thanks!
