Upgrade 523->603: Why is now IP for DNS server needed?

Our clients (XP Home, SP1) connect via Proxy to WG.
Server: NT4.0/SP6a, all MSFT patches installed
WG: ENS+NAT+FW enabled

After upgrading from 5.23 to 6.03 our clients show for each URL "host name look up failed".

Solution: WG now expects the IP of the DNS server. By the way, after upgrading WG DNS service was disabled.

Why do we now have to enter that IP number? Under 5.23 WG retrieved that IP. We prefer that kind of behaviour as ISPs frequently change their DNS servers' IP (at least here in old Germany they do....)

You should not need to enter the IP; WinGate will still try to discover the IP in the same fashion as it did before. I'll double check this on Monday; but where did you enter the IP?

Was there any indication as to why the service was stopped?

No idea why DNS service was stopped after WG upgrade. It simply was put to "disabled".

I had to enter the DNS server's IP # manually under "System"- "DNS/WINS Resolver".

After entering that IP # the clients can now again retrieve web pages / FTP / POP / NNTP

Any idea why that IP# is necessary?

Haven't been able to find a reason for this (yet). Once a minute the system validates all it's servers (Those discovered from networking properties, etc.) and will add new servers it learns about.

One thing is that when servers become unresponsive they are put into a stand-down period; during which they will not be used. Once this period has expired they become 'good' again. Could it be something like that? (Your log files would show that there are no entered servers, none responded ,etc.)

How do you connect out to the Internet? Is this through a dialup/similar interface or is a permanent on connection? (Basically after how your ISP changes the DNS servers for you; is it a DHCP release/renew, or a manually instigated connection, etc.)
