Dns keeps locking on internal connection for dns server

Dec 05 04 6:56 pm

I am currently running wingate version 6.0.0 I have attempted to upgrade to 6.01 and 6.03 but keep having the same problem.

instead of using the isp's dns server wingate loops back to itself on the internal connection.. HELP os is win98.. isp is attworldnet... all connections are made through NAT due to internal Hardware firewall in the Hub. Wgic connections impossible... What can I do to resolve this???

How is DNS configured?

It's quite possible that you've setup a loop on your configuration. Ensure that your internal connections do not have a DNS Server set (If you're NOT using Active Directory) but only has your ISPs DNS Server set for the external pointing interface.

If you are using Active Directory - exclude the AD DNS Server from your list of DNS Servers using Advanced Options (Found on the Start Menu with WinGate 6.0.3)

How do I check it

How do I find out if dns is set on the internal connection...

als a footnote to the original problem... I set 6.01 back up... and did not install the license till after the system had rebooted and I had re-established my dialup connection... and system works fine... till I reboot the system.. then I'm back into the loop... I do not have a set dns server for my isp.. it is set on connect... plese advise...

Check the properties of your network card. I don't have a 98 installation at home; so can't guide you through that.

Alternatively - run winipcfg (Or winipcnfg) from the command line, that will launch an application that shows you the configuration.

dns for the ethernet card is disabled

I checked the propertys for the ethernet card.. dns is disabled.. wins is disabled... what would make the configuration work under 6.0.0 and not under 6.0.1?

Ok ... then how does DNS loop? What do you see happen when this problem occurs?

Next step would be to check the settings for your adapter. It should be okay, but that's worth a check. (Internal vs External)

Further on this: in email discussion, the DNS Server does not seem to be looping. It looks as if knowledge of the server is lost after a certain amount of time. One possible solution is to add this DNS Server to the list of known servers. (Which means WinGate will always know where to find a DNS Server)
