DNS Problems

May 21 05 4:32 am

Still using ver 6.0.3 of Wingate and the last 2-3 days only I have been experiencing random DNS lookup failures. I have a 3rd party email server behind Wingate (GroupWise). Several emails fail, in a few instances, mail addressed to 4 recipients fail in that 3 recipients will be delivered and 1 will fail. Each time, it is a different domain that fails (450 Host down).
Tracert from a machine behind Wingate will fail, but a Tracert from the Wingate server (Win 2000 machine), will succeed. DNSStuff.com reports the email address as reachable.

I restart Wingate and the email can be re-sent successfully and the tracert's succeed.

I spoke to our carrier and re-confirmed the resolver addresses (even though we have been using them for 9 months now).

Any ideas for me on where to look for this random activity? Appreciate any ideas.

Do you get any other symptoms of DNS failure (i.e. inability to browse to websites)?

Do you use an Active Directory on your network - or more specifically have you configured the DNS settings on any of your network cards to use a DNS server on your LAN? If this is so, WinGate may also try to use this DNS server, which could cause intermittent DNS lookup failures.

the WinGate Advanced Options application allows you to specify DNS servers NOT to use. We recommend to people who have internal DNS servers configured for active directory, that they enter these DNS servers in the list of servers to not be used. That means WinGate will only use the external ones.
