WGIC Troubles

Jun 29 05 8:49 pm

On client computer (Win XP pro SP2) WGIC doesn't start automatically. Worst connection to internet is possible, but creates problem with outlook.

Wingate is running on Win 2000.

I noticed that very often I don't have the message "connected to" and the wgic icon doesn't show up.

I try stopping wgic (I get the message saying that I cannot connect anymore to internet but with another connection method) and when I start IE it works. In gatekeeper I'm able to see the connection tracks.

On Win2K, I checked if internet connection is shared, it's not the case.

Is anybody already facing such a problem?

1. a) What version of WinGate are you using?
1. b) Have you ever upgraded?
2. What problem with Outlook?
3. Do you have the Windows firewall enabled? If so please try disabling it.
(Right click My Computer --> Manage --> Services and Applications --> Services --> Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
4. Can you see the Wingate server in the WGIC applet?
5. Can you ping the client from the server?

1. a) Version 6.04 (I also reinstall WGIC from this release)
b) Yes, but the current installed version has been installed from scratch.
2. Outlook is able to receive but not to send email. Then I have to restart Wingate server computer and the client. Also when WGIC is not starting and internet is still working (not from cache) opening links from internet pages is not working.
3. No, firewall is not enable.
4. Yes wingate server is visible. Very often reseting WGIC is solving the problem, but not all the time.
5. Yes, of course, and either by IP adress created by DHCP server or by the name of the computer.

1. Did you upgrade the WGICs for the clients at the same time? The new WGIC is here: C:\Program Files\WinGate\Client

2. a) What error message does outlook give
2. b) Have the clients outlooks been changed since you started having this prob .. i.e it may be that your SMTP server requires authentication.
2. c) Do you use WinGate to host your email?

Also, can you just give a bit more details on this statement below?

On Win2K, I checked if internet connection is shared, it's not the case.

Hi James,

Here are the answers to your questions.

1.Yes, WinGate server and WGIC are from the same delivery downloaded on my computer.

2.a) b) c)I'm no longer sure that Outlokk troubles and the fact WGIC doesn't start are linked. I have to check email server hosted on the Win2K computer. I'll come back latter on this forum.

On the Win2K LAN server I checked that : "Network and Dial-Up Connections > Properties": "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection" is not ticked.

Now I would understand how it is possible that I'm able of opening an Internet connection on the client computer when there is no sharing of the connection and WGIC is not started. IE parameters for the client is: "Internet Options > LAN Parameters": nothing ticked.

Thank you for your support.

Information complement

Hi James,

in addition to my previous answer, please find here additional information:

There are 2 computers connected to Wingate server, both using Windows XP Pro SP2.
For one WGIC is working normaly.
For the other without reseting client, it seems not working.
On Gatekeeper, the one working normaly shows WRP Control Session, for the other no WRP Control Session, but tracks of internet requests as long as client is not reset.
The 2 computers are using same release of WGIC.

I hope it will help you in the diagnose.
