Install help

Jul 28 05 1:17 pm

I have just installed a cable modem and am looking for an alternative to ICS.

I have three computers networked through a wifi router.
2 X win98SE & 1 X XP. Until now I have had 1 win98SE machine with a dialup connection and the other two have been able to access the internet via ICS.

Now a cable modem has been installed into the same machine as the dial up was but ICS won't work with it (indeed it hangs the computer on start up). Broadband works fine. The network is still working, all the computers can see each other.

I installed Wingate (trial) in the hope of using it simply as an alternative to ICS (even though) I know it is capable of doing more and it seems to be working in the task bar. However only the XP recongined it and installed it as a client, but failed to be able to connect to the internet. The 2nd win98 computer didn't recognise Wingate at all, I manually installed it as a clinet but it "complains" that it can't find a wingate server.

I am running norton internet security and anti virus on all machines so didn't install ENS.

Is there something simple I haven't done? I haven't done ANYthing other than install the software.

Hi Dins,

So you've installed the WinGate server on one of the 98 machines? Are you able to log in to the GateKeeper? Are you still able to browse the internet with the server installed?

For the other two clients you can just set the proxy settings to point at the IP address of the WinGate server and they should connect fine. You should be able to see the clients connecting in the activity screen in GateKeeper.

Really it would be ideal if you reinstalled and selected the driver, WinGate version 6 likes to have the driver installed, if you don't have the driver then you are limited to connections through the proxies.

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,

thanks for the quick reply. No I can't log into the Gatekeeper. It asks for user name/password or use windows login. I don't have the first (to my knowledge) and the second doesn't work. I have tried my home network user name and password without success (same as windows login?). Is there something else I should be using or should have done/supplied in the set up?

I'm not at my set up right now (it's at home, I'm at work). So I'll look into the proxy thing tonight. But I don't know what you mean by the "driver".

cheers

The default username and password for WinGate is:

Username: Administrator
Password:

If you are unable to login with that, please have a look at this knowledgebase article

To use your Windows username and password, you will need to log into GateKeeper with the above username and password, then change the "Datebase Options" to use the local Windows user database (please note, if you use this, you will require to have each users login credentials added into your local Windows users database... if in doubt, just use the default WinGate database until you have it all set up correctly. More configuration can come later.)

Proxies are an easy way to test if the WinGate machine is sharing the internet connection. If you would like to have similar benefits to ICS, you will want to use NAT; more on that below.

When Matt said "Really it would be ideal if you reinstalled and selected the driver, " He means, reinstall Wingate with the ENS option ticked. Sure this means the firewall is added, but you can disable that. The two best thing about having the ENS installed is:

1. It allows you to use NAT. NAT is good because you do not have to configure individual application with any special settings. You add it once into the client computers TCP/IP settings, and that is it. You can stil utilise benefits of proxies (caching, virus scanning, content filtering), but we can get to that if you ask about it. More information on setting up NAT can be found in this post.

2. It allows you to use WinGates VPN (Virtual Private Network), which can either
a) be a way to join two internal networks together over the internet
b) allow a mobile user to connect into their home network as if they were plugged directly into its LAN (Local Area Network)

From first post:

I am running norton internet security and anti virus on all machines so didn't install ENS.

If you are having any problems, I suggest you disable Norton IS for the sake of testing; you could leave the WinGate firewall up to protect your machine while doing your configuration. The virus scanner should be ok to be left active.

Let us know how you get on.

HI Matt,

I reinstalled onto the (win98SE) server machine as you suggested including the driver. And accessed Gatekeeper through admin. also as you suggested.

The XP client machine connected and got through to the internet without further problems. So half way there thanks!

BUT the second win98SE client machine, "Clare", still not connecting to the internet.

Through CLARE>control panel>wingate internet client, I changed Wingate server to point at the specific IP of the wingate server machine.
As well through control panel >internet options> connections> LAN Settings> ticked "Use a proxy..." inserted same address and port as above. Deselcted "Bypass proxy for local addressesl"

"Clare" is no longer complaining about no wingate server at start up but when trying access the internet an error message indicates that it can't see the server. AND still no internet connection though some activity recorded in Gatekeeper:

Client Activty monitor tab shows "Clare"

WRP control session CCPROXY.EXE
WRP control session CCAP.EXE

Network tab fails to see "Clare" though the XP client and win98SE server are there (Neighbourhood network from the desktop shows all including "Clare")

History tab shows activity from "Clare" Firefox and SSDPSRV.EXE
But no NAT:TCP activity for "Clare"

Disconnected Norton IS on both client ("Clare") and server but made no apparent difference. Reconnected.

Thanks for your help so far. Hope there are a few more tricks to try.

Cheers dins
