I recently went from dial up to DSL on a small home network that runs peer-to-peer using the machine that has the Wingate server on it as the gateway. I ran with Wingate for nearly a year in the other configuration without any difficultly. I also recently loaded 6.04. After making the necessary configuration changes including the addition of a second Ethernet card to the gateway machine - three other desktop machines configured the client automatically and work fine. This communication is being created from one of those clients. However, the laptops configured with the client without any error messages, but do not appear to find the proxy server when Netscape starts. The laptops are visible to all the peers in the network and data can be copied and shared between them. I have made sure that the network settings are the same as for the desktops that work. This is cabled Ethernet network with all runs under 60'. Do laptops need special settings? Has anyone run into this?

I didn't see a way to delete a posting so I will tell you how I resolved the problem. I changed the setting on Wingate to recognize the channel from the router as external. This cleared up the problem with the laptops. I am still a little concerned because the desktops worked OK before I did that. However, everything is working now.

Hi Dan,
This could have been because the laptops were using NAT? WinGate requires two adapters for NAT to function, one marked as internal, the other as external.
Proxy connections will still work, so it's not surprising that the desktops were able to connect via the proxy.
