Windows Update

Aug 18 05 2:03 am

Since we installed the latest version of Wingate, we are unable to get to the Windows update page. We get the error message " the website has encountered an error and can not be displayed. Error number 0x00710DD.

Help!

Hi Ann

Can you browse to any other web pages, or is it a problem for all sites, or just windows update?

Only Windows update.

Hi Ann,

I have searched google, alta vista and microsoft for a description of that error message, to no avail.

1. Can you confirm it is the correct error message.
2. Have you tried creating a policy so WinGate does not cache the Windows Update site?

(Windows) Start menu --> Programs --> WinGate --> GateKeeper --> Caching

3. Sometimes Windows Update can be restricted by security settings in Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer --> Tools menu --> Internet Options --> Security tab

Click on the custom button, and in the drop down menu as shown in the image below, select low, then try to do your Windows Update again. If it still does not work, go back and change the custom setting back to its default (Medium?).

I went to extended networking and enabled NAT. Once I did that, it worked.

What exactly does changing this setting mean?

Thanks,

Ann

NAT allows connections from the client machines to pass through WinGate to the internet.

Without NAT you must connect to a proxy service on WinGate, so the update was probably trying to pass traffic over a non-proxied port. Without NAT there was no way for the connection to get through, so the update was failing.

If you watch the activity screen now you should see client connections that have a NAT icon, this shows traffic that is not passing through a proxy.
