Users configuration and stuff

Aug 09 08 9:00 am

Hi guys

Ok first off sorry for sounding like a total newbie. I had been using winproxy ( boo hiss ) for many years before they pulled the plug, and have now moved over to WinGate. Quite pleased so far, however I cannot work out how to set up Users so that I can monitor usage and filter on a user basis. I do not run a domain controller, I have installed a client on one of my machines thinking that maybe there was a setting in there, but no joy.

Can someone please explain how to get this configured?

Also when I go to the History tab I get nothing at all. I really need to be able to log whats going on on the network, whats the story here?

anway thanks in advance

Steve

Welcome!

You will need some sort of user recognition, in Wingate at least assumption.

In the Users tab --> Assumed users by IP and machine name.

For each service you can specify a level of recognition with the least being Guest, next Assumed and then Authenticated.

The History one is a bit odd, what you can try is to stop the Wingate Engine and delete the History files found in the Wingate directory then restart the engine to see if they were corrupted perhaps.

If that doesn't work, right click the History pane to configure the History settings, sorry can't be more alert --> migraine right now. ;(

In addition to Nev's post, GateKeeper needs to have direct access to the history database files for it to be able to read and display them, this means history only works when GateKeeper is run from the WinGate directory. If you are using the GateKeeper remotely, history will not be displayed.

If you want to use GateKeeper remotely and still view history, you could share the WinGate directory to the network and then create a drive mapping of that network share on the remote computer. Run the GateKeeper from the drive mapping and it will have access to the history files on the WinGate server.
