Client activity shows IP addresses instead of computer names

Mar 25 09 2:39 pm

I installed the trial version on Windows XP Professional. Most client computers joined Windows 2003 SBS domain. In the activity windows where the real time internet access activities are monitored, I see most of the client computers are identified as IP addresses rather their names. Only a few of them are displayed as names. How to make the computer name is used for all computers?

Thanks.

David

Hi David,

WinGate gets computer names from the following sources,

1. DHCP Records - WinGate receives and stores client computer names as part of the process of serving DHCP addresses to clients. WinGate will use this information to display computer names instead of IP addresses.

2. DNS - WinGate can figure out computer names by doing a reverse lookup on the IP address. This only works if WinGate is configured to resolve DNS through the ADDNS server.

3. NetBIOS - WinGate will also enumerate netbios names from the clients. This only works if the NetBios ports are not being blocked by a firewall on the client, which is a common case.

If WinGate can't get the computer name from any of the above methods, it will display the IP address.

Thanks, logan. Option 2 works perfectly for me.
