User Prompted to Login to Wingate Client as "SYSTEM&quo

Oct 05 05 5:31 am

We have Wingate 6.0.4 running in a Windows NT 4 environment. All users are running fine except one. This user is prompted to log in to Wingate immediately after logging into Windows with a user name of "SYSTEM". If he hits escape on this screen, it pops up again, and again he presses escape. This generally happens two to three times before Windows finally loads.

At this point, if he wants to access Outlook or the internet, he is prompted to log in to Wingate with his windows-based user ID (normal functionality I'm assuming). At this point he is able to log in to Wingate and access the internet.

Any idea why this is happening? And only on one particular machine?

Thanks.

Hi

This indicates that there is something running as a service on that machine that is using the WinGate Client. Services normally run in an account called "SYSTEM", which is why the user is prompted to log on as that.

You need to find which application is doing this. You should be able to see which one by looking in the activity screen in GateKeeper when this happens.

You then need to set that application to be local only -> in the WinGate Internet Client settings on the client machine, go to "Applications", add on with the name of the exe that is running, and set the mode to "local".

Adrien:

Thanks for the response. The application causing this is RTVSCAN.exe (Norton Antivirus). I have set the application to Local Only under Wingate Internet Client, but it is still prompting for "SYSTEM" login on boot up. This happens three times, and each time Gatekeeper is registering RTVSCAN as the application.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are you using Central Config for the Winsock Redirector Service?

I'm wondering if it is connecting to the server, and the server settings are overriding the client settings?

Adrien:

I apparently do not have Central Configuration as an option. I checked the help screen and it should be included in my version (6.0.4), but the Winsock Redirector screen does not show it.

In that case, would the server still be able to control the workstation settings without central config? Thanks.

That option is only available for enterprise licenses.

Did you previously use this with a trial version?

I wonder if some settings in there are still being used, but you can't control it any more due to your license.

Adrien:

Yes, we did start using it as a trial version and then applied the license after purchase.

The only thing that has me baffled is that we have ten other users on the Wingate system and none of them are prompted for the "SYSTEM" login on windows boot-up. If it were a setting in the Wingate server itself, wouldn't it affect all users and not just the one?

Thanks for your patience and your help.
