Firefox network binding

Aug 27 12 7:46 pm

Hello,
I have a Windows XP machine connected to 2 networks: N1 and N2. The default gateway is on N1. WWW Proxy Server is configured: “Bindings” - bind only to 127.0.0.1, “Gateways” – use only N2. Firefox proxy is set to 127.0.0.1, but it still uses the default gateway.
How can I set Firefox to only use N2, without changing the default gateway?
Regards,
Mike

Hi

the gateways tab only works for gateways recognised by WinGate as a gateway to the internet - this is:

* default routes
* dialup connections

You can have multiple default gateways, and still prefer N1, it just needs a lower metric than the other one.

If you go into the TCP/IP properties of your adapter(s), and click the advanced button, you can specify multiple gateways, and specify the metrics.

Once there is a default gateway there, WinGate can use it in the gateways tab on a proxy.

Hello Adrien,
It seems there is a misunderstanding.
On the gateways tab of the proxy I can add both gateways, but only N2 is selected. That is what I meant by: “Gateways” – use only N2. And the setup is exactly as you’re describing.
So I’m back to the original question.

OK

one thing which prevents gateway selection from working is other firewalls, especially MS Application Layer Gateway. Make sure the Windows firewall is not running and ALG.exe is not running.

Hello,
I disabled Windows Firewall and ALG services, restarted the machine and it’s the same.
Is there a way to disable automatic gateway selection and to always use a certain gateway in WinGate?

Mike

Hi

If you remove all entries / disable gateway selection, then the OS chooses the gateway. This is based on lowest metric. For example if you type "route print" from command line, you will see the metrics associated with the routes. The routes with destination of 0.0.0.0 are the default routes.

You can alter the metrics for default routes (gateways) by editing the advanced TCP/IP properties on your adapter(s).

Alternatively if you want a proxy to use a specific gateway that wouldn't otherwise be used (e.g. it has a higher metric than another default route), then you would just add that single gateway in the gateways tab.

is there any log information about failing to do gateway selection? Check the NAT logs or wingate system logs.
