Blocking Hotmail for some Users

Jan 21 06 8:47 am

Hi

I am running Wingate Server 6.0.4 B1025 in my Server (Win2k3 Standard SP1) which control the access to internet.

Users:
Users are assumed
System Policies - Everyone - Ban List enable

Services:
WWW Proxy Server - sessions - transparent proxy - Port 80

When I add a policy for X user under WWW Proxy Server - Policies - User - Advanced - Add filter - Criterion - HTTP URL - contains - hotmail.com and Default rights (System policies) MUST also be granted, it does not work at all.

Any clue on how to make this rule to work.. Thanks for your time.

If you want to allow some users access to hotmail, and some no access, the easiest way is to set up groups.

In one group you add users who are allowed access, and in the other group users who are not allowed.

then in the WWW Proxy policies, select default rights "are ignored",

add a policy which grants access to everywhere for the users that have access to everywhere.

Add a policy that grants access to everywhere except hotmail for the group that isn't allowed access to hotmail.

This requires that WinGate know which user is which (in order to tell whether to block them or not). You can do this with authentication, or it is sometimes simpler if your users only use one machine etc to have an assumption about who they are based on their IP address.
