Client does not connect

Feb 20 06 3:50 am

Hi
I have just tried to setup wingate using the following system :
2 pcs (both XP home), 1 cable modem, 1 hub. the host computer has one network card. from here I connect to the hub. The cable modem,is connected to the uplink port, of the hub. my 2nd pc is connected to the hub.
On the host pc, I have 2 connection icons in my control panel :
1 Connection 1394 , network card,
2 local connection ethernet card.
I have no idea what the first connection icon is for..?? The second is the one which is connected to the internet. It is setup to get IP automatically. On this pc I can access the internet. I can also access the 2nd pc through the network. using this setup, in my client pc the wingate client sees this as a server, but I cannot access the internet at all.

I am very confused as in the help, it says that I need to setup one connection to be auto IP and the other to have a local IP. I have tried all cobinations that i can think of but nothing seems to work.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Take not QBIK, If I am to buy this software, I need to get it to work first)

Thanks

David

Are you trying to use the WinGate Internet Client? The two network adapters in the WinGate server - what have they been detected as in terms of useage - Internal / External? (You can check this from the Network pane in GateKeeper)

---------------------------------------------
If you want to try a NAT setup:

1. On the Server (Internet connected machine) one network card setup in whichever way is required for it to access the internet. If this requires a dynamic IP, set it up in that way. (You already have that working, so sounds ok)

2. On the Server (Internet Connected machine) one network card setup with a static, private IP. This adapter should not usually have a default gateway / DNS server setup

3. On the Client machines (Connecting through the WinGate Server) set them to obtain their IP addresses and DNS Servers automatically. They should get this from the WinGate Server.

4. On the WinGate Server go into the Network pane and ensure that the adapters have been detected correctly. (Adapter 1 should be marked as "External", Adapter 2 should be marked as "Internal")

Thanks for the reply.
I am a bit confused. Does this mean I have to use 2 physical network cards in the server PC?
I currently only have one physical card, yet the network adapters in the control panel show 2 connections as i mentioned.

Thanks

No, does not necessarily mean that; I misread the "2 local connections".

IEEE 1394 is a firewire connection; not useful for the WinGate setup. So you can basically ignore that for this purpose.

1. What IP address is currently assigned to the "local connection" network card? Is it a public IP or a private IP?

2. On your client computer does the client computer see the WinGate Server? (In the Client Applet)

On the local connection, in order to be able to connect to the internet it has a dynamically supplied IP . In this state I can access the network from the server machine, and the wingate Client DOES see this as a server in its list. however I cannot access the internet from the client.
If I assign a private IP to the 'local connection', I can no longer access the internet from the server.

Hi David,

Probably both the pc's connected to the hub isn't the best solution.

The easiest method would be two NIC's in the Wingate / Server like this:

Image

Nic 1 could be Auto IP / gateway modem ip [EXTERNAL in network tab]
Nic 2 could be 10.10.0.1 / no gateway [INTERNAL in network tab]
Nic 3 could be 10.10.0.2 / gateway 10.10.0.1 / DNS 10.10.0.1

Hope this helps.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
unfortunately the host pc is still under warranty here and has a seal on it, so i am not allowed to open it to add a new card. Can it be done using the 2 pcs connected to the hub? This would be my ideal situation.

Thanks

I suspect that what is happening is the firewall in operation. How are the network cards detected in WinGate? Is the Local Connection detected as "External" ?

Hi
yes , Wingate detects its as external.

And I suspect then when you connect with the client you will be seeing firewall hits in the firewall tab. Okay, some more questions:

1. Do you have ENS (NAT) installed?
2. Does your cable-modem provide firewall functionality?

Hi,

Understood, how about a USB<->NIC adaptor, that way it's just using an existing port on the pc as say NIC2 in the example above, put that to the hub <-> PC2 with the IP config mentioned, ensure NAT is installed and you are underway once checked as Internal / External in Wingate.
