When trying to login to gatekeeper I get a message telling me that the "Wingate server had been terminated".
I have searched posts with similar problems but nothing works. I have even tried uninstalling and downloading again and reinstalling but I still get the same.
If I use the uninstall, is there any files left on the system that need to be removed?
Help would be appreciated.

Usually that message is returned if you do not have access rights to administer the service, which is strange on a fresh install. There should not be any files / registry settings left over after uninstall.
However, check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Qbik Software \ WinGate to ensure that nothing is left over there.

Were you using default settings when logging in? (Administrator, no password). Also, were you using the OS Userdatabase?

I had made some changes in the policies and changed the password for the gatekeeper but apart from that I left everything else untouched.(I think?!)

Probably the policy change then. When working with policies it's always safest to ensure that the Remote Control Service (GateKeeper) policies has been set to ignore default (system) policies and that at least one administrative user has access rights to it.

If you want to email me the registry I can fix it up quickly and email it back to you. Address in profile.

Ok, update here as well so other users can benefit. The problem was with granting a specific user access in System Policies, but not for Everyone. The drawback there is the Remote Control Service (GateKeeper) uses System Policies to determine it's access rights. So, once you Administrator / configuration users have been denied access in System Policies nobody can log into GateKeeper anymore.
The workaround / safeguard for this is to ensure that the Remote Control Service has a specific policy setup to allow access to people who are allowed to administer it. It should also ignore System Rights. This is generally only necessary if you are using System Rights to control access; but is a useful safeguard to implement anyway.
