Open SMTP?

Apr 25 06 11:50 pm

Hi
I have two Network Attached Storage devices which purported to send messages via email. However on reading the manual they can only send to an Open SMTP server.

Is it possible to set up the Wingate SMTP server as an open one?

Hi

Yes, it's possible, but not recommended.

Normally an "open" SMTP server means it will accept mail from anyone to anyone.

So I think these Network Attached storage devices can be instead trusted, so that you don't need to open up the SMTP server.

Just add the IP addresses of these storage devices as assumed IPs, then they will be deemed trusted for mail delivery.

Great, thanks for for the info.

I guess I enter the assumed IP stuff in the assumed user of the users tab. I notice it can also be done by name. Would you recommend using the name tab as the NAS's are dynamically assigned the IP address.

Will it work if I tell Wingate to assume the NAS's are me and that all mail received are to be delivered to my mailbox?

HI

Unless WinGate is the DHCP server that is allocating these NAS devices their IP, the computer name won't work, so you would need to add it by IP. You can add a whole subnet though, e.g. use a wild-card in the IP address, so 192.168.0.* would cover all addresses in 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.0.255

WinGate mail doesn't allow you to direct all mail from a certain IP to a certain mailbox. But which domains do these NASs send to? You can direct an entire domain to a single mailbox.

Adrien.
