MSN 0.0.0.1 Socks4a How do i get it to work

Jun 15 06 8:37 am

Hi,
I allow msn users to connect via Socks I do not use ENS but a while a go the working system stopped! Now when users try and connect it fails to log in and the destination IP is seen as 0.0.0.1 which I read is due to it requiring socks 4a ?!?!

So my question is how can I connect users (without ENS) to msn?

I use Socks so I can control the times that access is given to the users.

They would also like webcam but this has never worked without ENS and I want to retain control over what sites are accessible and access times, may be it will work with socks 4a?

Hi

I don't think WinGate ever supported SOCKS 4a, only 4 and 5.

Did it used to work before using SOCKS?

It's possible it's a DNS issue, if the MSN client reverts back to 4a if it doesn't have DNS (that's the difference between SOCKS 4 and 4a, 4a tries to get the SOCKS server to do the DNS lookup).

Otherwise I'd probably recommend the WinGate Client, which will give you a lot of control over what apps they run and when.

Thanks, I will check the DNS side of it tomorrow and if not look at the wingate client, I guess that would solve the webcam issue also!
