Have Dsl & Cable, want to make a game go thru Dsl only

Jun 30 06 8:04 pm

I have both cable and dsl. I use dsl as a backup since it's cheap, but it's only 768k, compared to 10mbit cable. I play a lot of World of Warcraft. As anyone who plays would know, there are many servers to choose from in the game. Certain servers are incompatible w/ my cable provider, the game will lag out every time as soon as I log in. I don't get this problem on dsl. This is a known issue with certain cable companies. My config right now is 1 network card, 1 router, and the cable modem. When I use dsl, I unplug the cable modem, and plug the dsl in. For now.

What I'd like to do is configure Wingate so that when I load this game, it will route all the game traffic to and fro through dsl only, not the cable modem. I plan to buy a 2nd network card so I can have both dsl and cable plugged in, so I can continue to take advantage of cable's speed and d/l stuff in the back. Is this possible? All WoW traffic through dsl, everything else through cable?

If this is do-able, would someone kindly point out how this would be setup? Thanks much:)

Hi

What port numbers does the game communicate over?

WinGate services can be set up to channel all traffic through a certain gateway, but this doesn't work (yet) for NAT traffic, so it would need to go through a certain service.

You may be able to set up a TCP mapping, or use SOCKS or even the WinGate client, and set the respective service to connect out through your DSL line if you can get the game to use that type of connection.

Just looked it up on the game site, tcp port 3724.

OK

so can you set up a TCP mapping service on port 3724, linking through to the game server, and specify the gateway to use?

Then you'd need to choose the game server in the game as being WinGate

One more question. I've read elsewhere that when you have dsl and cable both plugged in, windows will default to one and turn off or override the other. While playing the game through dsl, I still want cable access. Do I have any worries here?

The OS will pick the default route that has the lowest metric.

So that's why in WinGate we put in gateway selection so that we can override the OS routing.

So, if your OS is currently pushing everything through the cable modem, this shouldn't change. Making a service in WinGate and specifying a different gateway for that service shouldn't affect anything else.
