Proxy not sending internet traffic down correct link

Jun 14 13 11:47 pm

Hi, I am new to wingate and I am a bit puzzled on how to get wingate www proxy working properly.

I have two internet links, the fast one being for the MD and his wife and kids when they turn up, and the slow one for the rest of us plebs.

The server has two NICs in there, 192.168.10.1 for slow internet and 192.168.1.1 for fast internet. The default gateway is set to the server, and everyone goes down the slow link for their internet, and I was hoping to proxy the fast link for the boss via wingate.

I have successfully installed wingate 7.3.1 and it all seems to be working fine, cept for the fact that it is sending all the proxy traffic down to the slow link, and the boss isnt gonna be happy with that. How do I make the proxy use the fast link?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

What I would recommend, is setting the metric on the fast default gateway in the OS to a lower setting than the slow one.

This will then make all traffic prefer the faster link.

Then if you want to use a single proxy, and have it choose a different gateway depending on the client IP, the only way to do that is using flow-chart policy.

If you can get your boss and the plebs to use different proxies, you can just set the gateway on the plebs proxy to use the slow link.

The reason I suggest making the default use the fast one, is that traffic that doesn't go through the proxy will then also use the fast link, e.g. skype etc.

Hi, Myself and my colleagues are not using a proxy, because our default gateway, is also our link to our sister site, about 1 mile away, and all our AD traffic, internet traffic, mail traffic, and file sharing stuff goes down that link, because we have a direct line of site connection.

So I dont really want to set a proxy on everyones machine, when all I really need to do is set it on my bosses machine. I dont understand why I cannot tell Wingate just to use the NIC I want it to use to send all traffic through that?

I dont want Wingate to behave as my default gateway, DNS or DHCP server, all I need it to do is run a web proxy service?

OK

I was presuming everyone was going through the proxy.

If you are just going to set your boss to use the proxy, then just configure the gateway setting in the proxy to use a particular connection.

One thing though - Windows firewall. This breaks the routing overriding that WinGate does for this gateway selection feature, so you'll need to turn this off.

Hi Adrien,

Excellent, thanks for that. It is now sending browsing down the NIC I want it to. Much appreciated.

On a side note, this posting took ages, and I assume that is cause of the time difference. Are there no moderators in the GMT timezone, or US timezone, who can authorise posts as well?
