Wingate 8.0 Host not found

Nov 09 13 4:06 am

I'm getting host not found for many websites. The DNS has been selected in WinGate as required.

The first time I access a website, it says host not found.. the second / third time .. it is successful.

Further, I'd like to know if wingate works as a proxy server or a gateway ? If it works as a proxy server (only via port 80)... is there any way we can forward ALL ports... i.e. Connecting to non HTTP ports.. like google talk application.

If it works as a gateway, that will accept connections from "Internal" and send them to the "external" network to some same port / server, and communicate the response back ?

What I'm trying to do: I have Dial up Internet on one machine... I want to connect internet on a mobile & a PC.. All the devices are connected to a Router in the same LAN.
From Android mobile, when I try to download google play updates or try connecting to google talk.. it doesn't work.. It works if I use 2G/3G internet on sim card. So I suppose the problem is that some ports on the router are not enabled... Please suggest.

Thanks
Jay

Hi

which version of 8 is this?

You may need to enable debug logging in the DNS client to see what the problem is. It's most likely an upstream timeout. Or if you're using internal servers for internet name lookups, they may have a forwarding problem.

With your second question (proxy vs gateway), I'm not sure what you mean - is this both for http, or any protocol? WinGAte will relay TCP connections using Network Address translation. Also the WWW proxy will make a request on any port specified in the request itself, so you can still make http requests to non-standard ports. Also the CONNECT method support handles non-https, so can be used to relay connections for other protocols (e.g. mail etc).

Hello

Corrected version: I'm really sorry about the version.. I over looked it. I downloaded it yesterday.. it is WinGate 8.0.4.

I don't have internal servers for name lookups. I am using my ISP's DNS servers. Can you please let me know how to enable debug logging in the DNS client ?

On Proxy v/s gateway, It is both for HTTP & Other protocols.. my client is android mobile, so the apps on mobile can have TCP connection or other non-http protocol..........
Do you intend to say that if I have wingate proxy server operating on some port 80, & if my client (android mobile) is also configured to send requests to that proxy server; the proxy server can accept requests made for other ports as well.. for example port 5223 for samsung push service, 5228 for google applications etc AND forward the requests to the target servers (of samsung/google) at their respective server ports ?? I believed if proxy server is at port 80 I can only operate with HTTP requests. In other words, do you intend to say we don't need port mapping while we have a WWW Proxy, while applications place request using HTTP/HTTPS/TCP other protocol on the specific ports. (I don't think samsung / google place HTTP requests for samsung apps/google apps, its TCP request).

I remember during installation I had received an error saying network driver was not successfully installed. I'm on Windows 7 Prof 64 bit... but it did not give any other error details. 1 more problem is that I'm using Lenovo machine.. Most machines have Thinkvantage access connection software that overrides windows wireless network management... This could be coming in way of getting this software installed. I've tried to install softwares like Virtual Router in the past, and they too reported problems with Wireless Lan.. Is there anyway I can troubleshoot the installation of Network driver.

In System32/drivers: I can only see ql40xx.sys ql2300.sys qwavedrv.sys for files starting with 'q'. Please assist

Edited: In addition to the previous post that I had edited, please note that the installer I'm using is WinGate8.0.4.4629-USE.

Error for Network Driver is : Error 0x8004a029:Installation failed.

Hi

apparently that install error relates to having already too many filtering drivers installed:

Error 0x8004a029 means that the maximum number of filter devices for the system has been reached. Other similar software ( VPN clients, 3rd party firewalls, etc ) install filters.

You can either attempt to remove other software that has installed a filter, or attempt to increase the following registry entry value to allow more filters to be installed.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters

Hi

You are correct.. I've a 3rd party firewall, another software that also works as a proxy server, vpn client etc . I can't remove much except 1 additional proxy server software. The limit you said is set at 8 and I've around 4 to 5 only. Can you confirm
1) if there is a way to find what 8 filtering devices are operating from registry etc.
2) In case I add the limit, will it impact the system performance ? or what will be the impact ?

Thanks

Hi

I think the filters are enumerated under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\{4d36e974-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

If you want to export this and send it to me, I can take a look at it for you. Send it to support@wingate.com
