Wingate doesn't disconnect the modem

Dec 23 03 9:26 am

Wingate 5.2.2 doesn't hang up the modem after idle period is reached. I've set Wingate's modem idle period to 10 minutes, but some times after all clients have been idle for more than 10 minutes Wingate still doesn't hang up the modem. I've set IdleTrafficLevel to 0x1000 (default was 0x200) and still Wingate doesn't hang up the modem.

Even after all clients are idle, there is still a slight amount of modem activity, but I'm not sure what is causing it...maybe DNS? (I have Win2k DNS enabled). Is IdleTrafficLevel the registry entry that I should tweak? What exactly am I setting when I set it to 0x1000? Is there another registy entry that I should try tweaking?

I'm using 5.2.2 on Win2k sp4. I have dialup modem.

Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

The IdleTrafficLevel is the amount of traffic per timer interval that will be ignored in terms of keeping the link up. So, if you check every 30 seconds, with an idle traffic level of 0x100, you'll need 256 bytes of traffic (In and Out) every 30 seconds to keep the connection up.

Is there any way to identify what causes this traffic ? (NetMon / similar application) Do you know if it is coming from the Server or from the Clients ?

All client compuers are turned off, so it can't be any clients causing the modem activity. It must be something on the Wingate server. I'll install zonealarm and see what is causing it.

How do I set the "per timer interval"? Is the default 30 seconds?

You could also try Commview. It shows the traffic per packet and you can clearly see what type of traffic it is (Except, it doesn't show you the originating application ... )

The "per timer interval" is the registry value "TimerInterval". It defaults to 7 seconds. You can set this value through GateKeeper - on the Dialer Settings page it is "Online status check update interval".
