I have just installed this software and am trying to get it to work for the first time. I open Gatekeeper and try to logon and get an error dialogue box "Problem connecting to server" that says "There was a problem connecting to the server. Connection refused by server. Check your server name and port number"
I have no idea how to proceed. Any help appreciated.
FYIW, I am trying to share a one-way satellite connection (USB satellite download modem, upload is via dial-up) across 2 PCs on a home ethernet network.
Some notes:
- I am running XP for Home
- I did not use a Username or Password in the Online Options login window. I do not know what username or password would work. It does seem to let me proceed without these since it tells me I have not specified a password and would I like to continue without one. If anyone knows what username/password works from the get go, I would appreciate it (note: I do not have passwords assigned to the user accounts on the PC).
- I did get an error message at the end of the installation saying that I did not have the appropriate priveledges to finish the installation. (Odd, since I am the Administrator on the PC.) However, the application does appear to have been loaded based on my ability to launch Gatekeeper and to see the icon in the system tray.

David,
Check Task Manager to see if WinGate.exe is running. If it's not, then the installation was not successful.

Hi David,
Suggest add/remove Wingate, then download the latest version [again] and try install from there, could be a corrupted installer?
It will work very well for your needs.

Did the unistall / reinstall from latest download version (5.2.2 on 12/29) and this time got a clean install with no errors.
However, when I went to login, same issue of being unable to logon, but slightly different error message. Instead of telling me to check the server name and port number, it said to check my username. I tried no username or password, Administrator as the username with no password, my exact screen name with no password, and my exact screen name with an invented password. All of these failed. I simply have no idea what username/password combo to use.
Also, after not being able to logon, I lost my ability to access the Internet, even after turning the engine off. So I unistalled WinGate and upon reboot got the following error message: "dcproxe.exe Application Error" with the message: "The instruction at "0x011fc02f" referenced memory at "0x01332bec". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program". This was after the unistall. I rebooted and again got same error and could not access the Internet. Finally, and luckily, my Direcway (satellite) software notified my that it had detected an incorrect proxy setting, which after telling it to fix, I was able to get online.
Is there a surefire username/password combo to get WinGate online?

When you installed WinGate, did you tell it to use the Windows NT user database?
If so, select "use current Windows logon"
Otherwise, first time should be username: Administrator, password blank.

If I recall correctly, it recommended not using NT since I am running XP Home.
Also, I tried both checking the box "use current Windows logon" and "Administrator" and password blank to no avail.

you can reset the Administrator password if it thinks it has one already.
To do this,
1. Stop the engine.
2. open regedit.exe, go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Qbik Software\WinGate\UserDatabase
delete the Administrator subkey from here
3. start the engine again.
Then try logging in with no password, and the username Administrator to the local machine on port 808 (default port for Remote Control Service)
If this doesn't work... what port number does the DirectPC proxy run on do you know?
