I talked an end user through downloading and installing Wingate 5.2.2 .... got it installed, rebooted the system ... logged, changed the ADMIN password .... closed, rebooted, opened again (passowrd change accepted) and now I talk her through her VERY LAST WINGATE ACT .... activating the REMOTE CONTROL FEATURE so that I can install it from the outside ...
Select remote control (as I have always done)
Select 'allow connections from any interface' (as I have always done)
Click on "apply and OK' (as I have always done)
and get A C E S S D E N I ED error box.
No info on this error in this contect anywhere in the knowledge base
What could POSSIBLY be wrong ???? and why is this happening?

Don,
Try this.
Delete the Remote Control Service.
Stop and Start the WinGate engine.
The service will be recreated and should clear up the problem.

Does the end-user have a WG-Plus license ?
Access-denied means that the right to use a certain feature is not granted. This could be because of an incorrect rights setup (Doesn't seem likely) or because a license doesn't grant it.

It's a normal, trial version installation ... remote control should be a standard part of that ...
further ... I can't delete it ... it's a SYSTEM option ... not a SERVICE

Yup, trial version should be fine for that. I think Larry meant through the registry, but that's a bit more difficult. Would it be possible to talk the end-user through that ?
Was anything installed / done differently to the installations that you have done before ? (Even so far as version numbers in WG ?)

About the only other thing to check as far as I can see in the source code is = Edit Rights for a service per user. Just make sure that the user logged in to GK has edit rights. (Perhaps validate this by trying to edit another service ?)

While waiting for replies ... I did a bunch of stuff. Typical stuff you'd expect ... not unlike a monkey just banging on a typewriter in hopes of eventually typing a novel.
I uninstalled Wingate
downloaded RegVAC and cleaned the registry
rebooted the PC
re-ran registry clean
re-booted again (superstition at this point)
downloaded a new copy of Wingate Iinstall
reinstalled
same problem .... in fact ... changes to ANY system feature are denied. one thing I noted is that there are NO entries in the 'services' tab at ALL. Just the few in the 'system' tab.
What I suspect is that Wingate THINKS I'm authenticated, but in fact I'm not.

Ah. That sounds more interesting. Are there any interesting SysLogs at all ? It might pay to check the WinGate System Log file directly.
Has this user trialed WinGate before ? (5.0 and upwards)

Yes ... I think there was a 5.0. something on this machine prior ... but I removed it some time ago
is that any help?

Quite a bit. The previous trial period has expired. Hence, it won't allow you to re-trial within the same version number. I'd have expected a dialog to appear though, and some rather obvious SysLog warnings.
I'll have to chat to Adrien about some alternatives, but he's out of the office at the moment.

After painstakingly cleaning registry entries I was able to get it to install. I spend the $$$ for the upgrade key and now it's functional.
I can't get it to WORK FOR ME ... because the Email is NOT intuitive and the help screens doen't address what I need .... but this thread is closed.
