Dialup connection speed

Postby tpaulson » Oct 05 04 4:46 am

My old wingate server died, so I just installed Wingate 5.2.2 on another computer. The new computer is running WinXP. I only have a dial-up internet connection that I am sharing with 2 other computers. When the Wingate server is enabled, my connection speed is always 19.6k bps. If I disable the Wingate server and manually connect to the Internet on the server, the connection speed is 50k bps.

Why is the connection speed slower when the Wingate server is enabled?

How do I get the connection speed up to the normal 50k with Wingate enabled?

Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,

Have never had an instance where a line speed was reduced because Wingate was present on a machine!

How is your line speed affected if you:

1\ Stop the Wingate engine.
2\ Connect to the internet using your dial in profile from network conx.
3\ Start the Wingate engine, does it drop the conx or remain a flex conx?

Also I suggest turn on debug logging for the connectoid and see what that reports.

Bottom line though, it's best to upgrade to V6.0.3 and see how that changes the picture.

Report back and someone will take it further.

Stopping Wingate engine, dialing manually using connectoid, restarting the engine, did Not change the connection speed of about 50k.

Here is the log of the current session started with Wingate engine started and dialing via the Dialer properties.

Any suggestions on this?

I know it may be strange, but it is very repeatable. Anytime Wingate is enabled the connection speed is never above 24k. If Wingate is disabled the connection speed is never below 45k.

My modem is a Conexant HSF v92 56k RTAD Speakerphone PCI in a Dell 2400 computer running WinXP Pro.

I don't see why I need to spend another $70 to upgrade to version 6 when the version I have should work.

You don't have to spend any money to upgrade. Your older version license keys will work with WinGate 6.x. (Back to version 3) All that happens is you don't get the new features, but all the previous ones are there.

Did you install ENS when you installed 5.2.2 originally? WinGate should not (And cannot) change the amount of bandwidth a dialup connectoid gets when it connects to the ISP.

The only thing that might affect this is the WinGate driver, but we've never seen that before. Which other options do you have enabled, like QoS, etc. for that interface?

I didn't know that old keys would work.

Yes, ENS was installed.
I don't think I installed any other options. No plug-ins other than ENS, no vpn

I don't see QoS anywhere. Are you talking about the contectoid network properties or somewhere else?

Yes, I was thinking of the dialup connectoid properties. The actual WinGate engine will only use normal RAS functions to dial the connectiod, etc.

However, if you have ENS installed that is a network level driver. There could potentially be some interaction that gives you the lower connection speed. (And that would be visible if the Engine is stopped or not)

Is it only the OS that reports this, or is it visible in normal useage of the system as well? What does WinGate's traffic monitor report the speed as?

If you are going to be upgrade to 6.0 be sure to read the "Common Issues" topic at the top of the forum. There are some changes which you need to be aware of. 6.0 definately has improved support for RAS connections, though. (At driver level)

I unchecked to load the ENS driver and rebooted. Then I tried the internet connection with the Wingate Engine started, it still only connected at 24kbps.

I went to the Cnet Internet speed test and tested the connection speed.
With Wingate engine started, Windows showed 24kbps, Cnet test showed 23kbps
With Wingate engine stopped, Windows showed 47kbps, Cnet test showed 43kbps.

Wingate's traffic monitor shows speed as between 4 and 11 k while downloading, with Wingate engineer started or stopped.

I will download 6.0 and read the Issues topic.

I misread that, apologies - understood that with WinGate stopped it was still causing the same behavior. Which, is interesting. Very interesting. Can you switch on debug logging for the dialer as well, please? There are some log messages that will indicate which path it's following through the dialer subsystem (And thus which RAS structures and options are in use)

Just chatted to Gene about it. With 5.2.2 the driver uses a different hooking model to version 6.0 (6's is better and more streamlined) so he also recommends the upgrade to 6.0

Just install 6.0.3
Now I get a max connect speed of 9.6k with wingate engine running!
We are going in the wrong direction.

Okay, more questions. I've talked to most people here; and it's the first time we've seen something like this.

Does it make a difference where the connection originated from when WinGate is running?

If you dial from the OS when WinGate is running, does it report the full speed?

If it does then it will be a flag / setting that your system requires (Or that is particular to that RAS entry) that needs to be either configurable or changed.

It it does not then there is some interaction happening; we'd have to dig deeper to try and find out why though.

However, when you check the properties of the dialup adapter (From the network pane) - what is it's speed reported as there?

Does it make a difference where the connection originated from when WinGate is running?

If the engine is started the connect speed will be 9.6k if it is started from OS connectoid or from within Wingate.

If you dial from the OS when WinGate is running, does it report the full speed?

It does Not report full speed if Wingate is running no matter how you connect. If wingate engine is stopped it reports full speed. The speed reported by the OS matches the CNet speed test very closely.

However, when you check the properties of the dialup adapter (From the network pane) - what is it's speed reported as there?

9.6k when Wingate is running
45k to 50k when Wingate is stopped

Sorry, was referring to the speed reported in GateKeeper. With 6.0, if you switch to the network pane (After Activity) there is a list of adapters at the bottom of that pane. If you double-click on any adapter, it allows you to see properties of that adapter. I was after the information there, that reports the speed.

One major difference between WinGate 6.0 and 5.x is the enumeration of phone book entries. On XP and 2003 we've seen that it sometimes consumes more resources than it needs to; especially if you have other dialup connectiods that are disabled / not in use. What is your CPU useage like?

Then, does it make a difference if you re-create the connection and start taking options on / off? One of the ones that features in our discussions about this problem here was multi-link. Do you use that? If not, you could try disabling it. The cases I've been able to find searching the net has shown problems with that from time to time when the speed is reported as lower than it should be because of a multi-link connection.

If you double-click on any adapter, it allows you to see properties of that adapter. I was after the information there, that reports the speed

The speed reported there is the same as what is reported by the OS.

What is your CPU useage like?

10 to 20% while on the internet

I do not use multi-link. I tried it both ways it did not change connection speeds.

Okay. We're unable to reproduce this. What changed between your original server and the new one?

Is it a different set of hardware?

Hi,
I think there might be a reason for the modem to misbehave while WG engine is running - Conexant users complained quite a bit about the connection speed - take a look at the following web sites - I am sure there are links that can help you out:

http://www.modemsite.com/56k/soft56.asp

This one is probably more helpful:

Hi all,

Genie is right, these modems can often be the 'bane' of dial up connections.

I avoid internal [PCI] Winmodem's like the plague.

Try an external modem, this will isolate the issue fairly quickly.

Report back how you go!
